Looking for info on maintenance of mast rigging for our 1987 h40 #217. Have the mast (Isomat manufactured it) down. Have new shrouds & stays on order. They still looked OK but this is the 18th season for the boat. Halyard sheaves do not turn very freely. Thinking of replacing with metal sheaves with good bearings. Anyone know how to remove sheaves? Must we cut a weld? I will also ask this of Rig-Rite, Inc in Warwick RI. RF cable for antenna is smaller than the RG-8U a local chandelry recommends. Any advice on replacement of cable? We have no access to cabin top connectors without stepping mast. Any experience with cutting a hole at base of mast and covering with an access plate? Plan to replace anchor light and elect wires to lights. Hope to sail this wonderful craft many more seasons. Please pass on any suggestions for other maintenance while the mast is down.

I think they will have answers to all of your questions. I am not familiar with Isomat. But my Kenyon mast has two stainless covers, one screw each. Removing the little plates(.5"x1.5") lets the sheave axles come out. My sheaves are metal so I cleaned them and lubricated and no problems.

My two cents
I own a 1989 30G. I also have an isomat spar which is being suported by Charelston Spar. They stock the OEM derlin sheaves at a very reasonable price. As far as my mast goes the sheaves are all held in place with easily removed cotter and roll pins. The problems I can forsee with changing to bearing sheaves is that you will have to find the replacements with the same inside diameter to fit the existing pins. Finally, my isomat sheaves were metric dimentions. Good Luck.

Bearing may not be a good choice.
Carl: I asked this exact question of one of the vendors at a boat show several years ago and the recommended against using a bearing sheave for this type of an application. They claimed that they would get 'flat spot' in them because the are not moving like a traveler or a sheet block. You may want to get another opinion for a pro and see what they have to say. I suppose that Rig-rite would be a good place to start. Ronstan actually has something that I think would work.

I suggest that you contact Layline since Charleston Spars are going to recoment that you contact them anyway. I have found that they are very knowledgable about Isomat masts and can supply the correct shieves within a vew days.
