Islander 55 los angeles
I'm in California and I am refinishing an Islander 55 sailboat interior. Only a few of these hulls where built back in the 70's for daysail racing with limited interior space. I'm doing some structural repairs and rearrangement of cabinetry etc. After removing some paneling and bulkheads I found serious fiberglass delamination at the bulkhead joints and cracking along the inner deck seam that was obviously caused by flexing or rigging stresses. The deck to hull seam had been repaired with fiberglass mat once before according to the previous owner. I am considering thicker deck beams but head room is scarce. Has anyone had similar problems and/or repair solutions? Thanks. posted first Aug. 21/13.

You say that head room is limited but how is the spine flexibility? Are you able to duck when you come to a beam? have you considered installing the beam(s) on deck instead of below deck?

It would be valid to reinforce the entire deck with Airex core and fiberglass. Sacrificing only a couple of inches of head room. I did that with an Islander 30 adding a half inch of Airex core and two plies each of 24 ounce woven roving and 2.2 ounce chopped strand mat in polyester resin.

I have an Islander 55 (Hull #3). We are original owners and personally oversaw layup of FRP and all construction. It has been in our family since 1978 when launched. She is in Newport Beach and would love to get more info on your boat.

Thanks,

Wes

Interesting Thread! I looked it up ( ISLANDER 55 - sailboatdata ) and it's a Bruce King design. That's a great pedigree.
Any response will be a long shot, but comments from the OP or other owners would make interesting reading.
