Our marina mechanic has diagnosed our engine problems as a blown head gasket, bad water pump and 'water leaks within the engine'. He has stated that this is a $3000 repair, roughly. I am wondering if that is reasonable, since it seems a new engine could be had for that amount. He indicates that a new engine would be more like $8k+ and need modifications. Does anyone know how much new engines are? Where I can go to look for new engines? And what type of engine I have? (He called it a 'pathfinder' made by VW, but googling that brings up Nissan Pathfinders.) Thanks for any assistance you can provide.

Sounds like you are getting an engine overhaul. If he is going to replace the rings and bearings - a complete job then that sounds about right. A new engine is expensive and goes beyond just the engine. I had a 25 yr old Yanmar rebuilt and she runs good as new. If you take care of a diesel - especially after an overhaul (or new) - they will last a very long time.

That sounds fairly reasonable for a complete overhaul. I'm not familiar with the Pathfinder engine at all. If it's like most, the engine would have to come out of the boat to do a total overhaul. I would suggest that you get it in writing exactly what he is going to do for the 3K. For example, does that include new sleeves if that engine uses sleeves. If not new sleeves, does that include a rebore. Cam bearings replaced?? Lots of parts and pieces in there that would be included in a rebuild, but not included in an overhaul. Make sure you have this defined.
