Well, I've been watching posts for months on these products and I finally decided to buy some. Logged on and decided to buy the $45.00 kit. Okay... Advance to total amount to pay with credit card. $45.00 product, $8.00 shipping and handling (What?) plus 8.6% sales tax on product and shipping and handling. Total=$57.00. I decided I coud only afford the product. I order products all the time from Sailnet with no shipping and no sales tax. Thank you very much. Sean

I'm truly sorry if you feel you were overcharged. You're in WA and so are we... not much we can do about the sales tax. As for shipping, eventually Sailnet's investors will quit donating yours. This already happened at other dotcoms you've read about lately: Pets.com, eToys, and Eve.com to name a few. Most of the products we carry, including Island Girl, are low margin products, made in either small quantities or on demand. If we gave you shipping, we would have little or no margin on the sale. Since we have no investors to pay for shipping, we have no choice but to pass it along to you. While you can certainly choose to buy from sites that operate at a loss, I think you will find very few of the products we sell offered anywhere at lower prices. Certainly, if you compare the prices of our custom canvas, electronics, even clothing, you'll find they are perhaps the lowest anywhere. In fact, our regular AcuGage price is less than West Marine's _sale_ pricing this month! So, while our growth has been slower and quieter, we have learned to run a lean, efficient online chandlery that provides good prices, service, and will probably still be around years from now. I did, however, research your shipping and find that it was, in fact, $1 higher than what we are billed by the manufacturer. We truly do apologize for that. In our defense, we sell products from 1 oz. Sail Trim Charts to 40 pound tables, and we have to use the same shipping scheme for each product plus all of their combinations. It is imperfect. But, if you shop here enough you can be assured you'll make that buck back on one of the many products where we've under-priced shipping. And most of the other Catalog Marine stores do too. 3. If we want a site like Sailboatowners to be successful, we need to support them. Maybe even if it cost you a 'buck' now and then. Sales tax Issue
1st I've purchase many things here at HOW and have always been pleased. Things arrive when they are supposed to, or earlier, and are worth the money spent. Secondly, you should pay shipping charges, why do you think WM is higher, it's because they build it into the store prices. It's not free shipping when you buy retail, they still make up for it. Lastly, I own a photography studio that does over 50% of it's business on the internet. We MUST charge sales tax to our Massachusetts customers, since we are a Mass. based company. Though our few in-state clients feel like they are paying extra, we have no control over that. If we ship to Mass. the order gets charged sales tax, and shipping too for that matter. Slowly, I fear, the internet will be taxed by the Government, they always need more money for their pet projects. Bob Knott H380

Internet Tax Freedom Act
Kent, You're thinking of a Federal law which prohibits taxes on Internet access and/or electronic commerce specifically. The only exemption from normal sales tax rules is the sale of goods or services that are sold exclusively over the Internet with no comparable offline equivalent. However, that law does not supersede the general rule that businesses which have a nexus (essentially, a physical presence)in a state that collects sales tax must collect the tax on all taxable sales that are delivered to addresses within that state.
