Is your Yanmar 3GM running hot?

I'm in midst of replacing the mixing elbow (what a pain it was to disconnect that exhaust hose!). I thought the following article very helpful to determine why your engine may be running hot. Of particular interest to me was the 8 gallons per minute of water discharge through the exhaust at 2,000 RPM. http://www.geocities.com/babaweb1/yanmar-cool.htm Cheers, -j-

Check the Brass elbow fitting

I've had 2 Hunters with 3GM engines & overheating problems. Both were caused by the Brass fitting connecting the Heat exchanger exit hose to the mixing elbow being plugged. Now, that's the first thing I check.

Screw Driver and WD-40

James: When I posted my article in the Photo Forum on changing the mixing elbow, I found the same thing. What I did was use a screw driver to pry open an opening between the hose and the nipple on the elbow. Once it was partially open I squirted some WD-40 in the opening and let it sit while I enjoyed a cold one. The WD seemed to soften the rubber enough to get it loose all the way around. The next part was really the worse part, that was trying to break the manifold loose from the elbow. We used a very large vice, a pipe wrench with a breaker bar and a torch to heat up the coupling between the elbow and the manifold. When you reassemble the unit, be sure to use some never sieze on the treads. You should also put it on the treads that hold the manifold to the block too.

I did it yearly. Took a small spring, put it in a drill bit, sprayed with carb cleaner and ran it in and out a few times. Rick D.
