Hi Guys, I was looking for a small genset. On the Westerbeke web page they have a small 4200 W genset (4.2BCDT) with enclosure, looks like a great configuration for smaller boats. I wonder if any one has this unit or know of any issues with it. Thanks Jim Wharton

Watch out for Noise

I ordered a genset with my 380 a northernlight 5.5kw, hunter told me that it would be quiet enough to sleep with! However it turn out to be very noisy, way to noisy to sleep with. I finally called Northernligth and ordered a enclosure that is supposed to cut noise in helf. I'm installing it tomorrow. My genset is supposed to generate 80 decibels without the enclosure and 70 decibels with the sound enclosure. Decibels go like eartquake... From 80 to 70 the noise is cut in half. Get the decibels reading from westerberke if it is 80 with the soud enclosure... It will be noisy. Even if you don't use it to run AC at night, a genset is good to have. It will enable you to have a toster, microwave, coffee machine but most importantly it will charge you battery faster, twice as fast... With my engine I charge, with my Inverter, at 70 amps/hrs but with my Genset I charge at 130 amps/hrs!!! Hope this help !

In appreciation of the environment and others ....

Please do not use your generator at night in a quiet anchorage. I too have a Hunter 30 and have not needed nor do I want a generator. Too many boaters lack respect, or just don't think, about others around them. Remember the reasons why we love to sail. Regards and happy sailing, Doug, Mokum II

Why do you need a Genset

I agree with Doug think of others before you use ta Genset at night. What are you a sailor or a floating Diner. Why do you need all that power. I sail offshore a lot but a Genset is more load than I need to carry - get back to sailing. You sound like a power boater. Smooth sailing g

get off your soapbox!

Dear Gerard and Nameless: Please keep your neuroses to yourselves. This is not the forum to put your personal bs on a soapbox. The gus aked about a particular gen-set. You have NO idea where or when he is going to use it, and its certainly none of YOUR buisiness at this point to tell him How to use it. If you can't answer the question, or proivide related insight, keep your fingers still!

Westerbeke 4.2BCDT

Well said, F. Yaskin. to respond to your original post, the 4.2BCDT is an excellent generator, especially where space is limited. The water cooled back end is what makes the package small and quiet. All the air that is needed is for combustion and the overboard exhaust can be quieted with the proper muffling. The 8.3k price tag will probably keep it off smaller boats. I've got one on the floor that I'd be happy to talk about with you.

Reason for use

I'm surprised of the response on my request on this gen-set. I guess most of you don't live in the south!! We have our boat on Lake Texoma (north Texas). Over the last few months it's been over 100 degrees (110 this weekend!!!!). And at night in the 90s (Hot as hell). Anyway, we have small children on board and trying to sail with all of them in the cockpit is very difficult. If the winds are light it's very hot down below. We are looking for a genset that's small and quiet (max 30 amps). Thanks for the help Jim

Heve you looked at http://www.air-condition.net/. The 12V DC area swamp cooler looks interesting.
