Vang same as traveler ; except when the traveler is to windward creating a mainsheet angle which allows the boom to rise when the boom is centered or above? In all other instances ,the traveler within its length of travel uses the mainsheet to pull down on the boom or the vang pulls down on the boom to maintain sail shape. Then the traveler or mainsheet in the case of the vang is used to set the angle of attack

Vang used downwind

Traveler and main sheet are used to shape and position the sail while going into the wind or on a broad reach. Once the boom is let out more that on a broad reach the travler and main sheet become ineffective at conroling the downward pull on the boom needed to shape the mainsail. The vang provides this downward pull at these times (and others). Use the vang to flatten the sail on down wind courses and keep the sail out of the spreaders.
