compete in the finals of the Americas Cup. Its not looking good for team Oracle.................they need flukey winds below 13kts to wind. Has there ever been a Land locked nation in the AC finals....Where would Switzerland have the America's Cup if they won.....Mediterranean or somewhere else?

Alinghi to hold races in Newport

I think if Alinghi wins the cup they should hold the next races in Newport, R.I. This is where these races belong. dave

Lake or Ocean?

The original Americas' Cup Deed of Gift refers to participating clubs having their annual regatta on an "arm of the sea". I don't know if that limits the races to being held on the ocean. Derek

Where the races belong!?

Dave, How do you figure that the AC races "belong" in Newport? Should the Aussies or Kiwis have mounted their defense there? I say lets go back to making the race a free-for-all once around the Isle of Wight. Chris

Mediterranian

I beleive they have already announced to hold the races in the Med. Probably near Italy. That is where the Billionaire that owns the syndicate is from. Les Murray

The Med would improve the Cup

I have not sailed there - yet - but from the various guides I've read, including LOTS of wx discussion since it's such a crap shoot over there, I think a Med Cup would force designers to deal with a much wider wind range than they've had to before. That in turn would at least introduce some variety into the Cup. Can you imagine a race in light flukey airs, followed the next day (or even later the same day) by a Meltemi blast. Designers would have...well, design boats for a wide range of conditions...just THINK of the challenge! Jack

Where the races belong!? - Maybe off Sandy Hook NJ

Thats were they were for a while before they moved them up to Newport. I like the idea of one long free for all race. This back and forth course is just not as variable, thus not exciting.

America's cup joke

What a crock that whole thing is. That whole national challenge thing is out the window. A Swiss(?) boat crewed by a bunch of Kiwis. The Am. Cup race is going to be Kiwis against a bunch of other Kiwis. Big yawn.

Aren't we jumping the gun...

... just a little bit? There's a VERY good chance the next challenge will be held in Aotearoa (Land of the Long White Cloud) a.k.a. New Zealand!

AC Boats

I am convinced these boats have got to go and a new class be developed. I seem to remember that in the twelve meters they would have an upwind leg, a reach and then a downwind run...a triangle course. This forces a broader design perspective as well. Block Island sound is the perfect venue for these races and the deed of gift should be modified to require all races to be held there. The races in San diego were boring...too light a breeze, and the races in New Zealand have been generally boring as well...we need boats racing in 25 knots of breeze not just 8 to 18. I want to see waves break over the bow up to the mast forcing the crew to have to deal with survival not just racing. Dave

Derek, You are right. I was just wondering.

By the way I agree with Dave. I would much rather see the boats run .a triangle course.

Yes and no

While I agree with Dave that a triangle course in windier conditions would make the competition much more interesting I can't let him get away (for a second time) with suggesting that all future racind should be held within the United States. Don't forget that the cup is named for a boat, not a place. (Yeah, I know, the boat was named for the place. That's beside the point). The fact that the holder gets to decide where the defense will be held does not appear to have eliminated competition over the past 20 years. If Dave wants a front row seat perhaps he should just mount a successful challenge. Then he can defend in his own back yard. Personally I'd like to see 'em tacking up the Ohio River in front of the new Red's stadium (Great American Ball Park, opening next spring) but I'm guessing that won't be happening any time soon.

Hauraki Gulf Conditions.

Marge and I flew down to NZ mid-December. We got off the plane and on to a charter boat to go look at the races. That day the race was cancelled because the average wind was 19.7 knots (the cut-off was 19 knots). Meanwhile, about a mile or two away there were two very large fleets of kids in little 8 foot P Class and Optimists having an absolute ball in the strong breeze! Go figure. The point is that there has been no lack of breeze for the Louis Vuitton Cup, it was the challengers who set the sailing limits and turned it into a boring run around the buoys. Their rationale was that they were trying to optimize the boats for the lighter conditions expected in February... Hopefully the Cup races will have more sensible top-end wind limits.

Perth

The best Americas Cup racing in the past 60 years was held in perth when Dennis recovered the cup. Racing was held in incredible conditions, very strong winds, and huge surf. The boats had to be strong enough to survive the conditions. These AC boats would all break in half in those conditions. One of my greatest sailing experiences ever was on a very windy day leaving Newport, R.I. to return to Mystic , Ct. Shamrock V was heading out at the same time and I was able to hold a tacking duel in my 35 O'Day with a J-Boat. Watching Shamrock heeled over and going hull speed right next to me was an awesome sight. Unfortunately for me our courses diverged after several tacks as they headed East and I headed West. They obviously split off from me and headed out to the left side of the course looking for a shift to give them an advantage. I took some pictures of Shamrock and if I can find which CD I stored them on I will post later today. This is when I was convinced that the racing should stay in Newport and be sponsored by the Museum of Yachting and the Boat Restoration School. It should also be opened up to a wider range of boats so I can enter my 35 and beat the pants off these AC boats in 30 knot conditions while they are all fractured in half. Dave
