Where did they say that?
Oops, he doesn't say that in his post. I think I got him confused with a person with a similar small boat in another thread who was moving his boat from fresh water to salt water.

However, a point can be made that this boat has currently been sailing in salt water with no issues yet.

Fair point, if that is true. But, I don't think we know when it was last in the water, where, or for how long. That would be good to know because I agree that, if it has already had prolonged exposure with no issues, then a few more months probably won't hurt much.

I just made the assumption that this boat has been mostly trailered and that these were trailering wounds. Though, it is hard to tell.

I just don't know why one would not just address this while the boat is already out of the water. It appears to be a pretty simple repair, right now. I mean, even if one were simply to slap a layer of epoxy over the damage and say, "I'll fix it properly later", that is still better than leaving exposed fibers. (I know myself well enough to know that I, personally, could not do it that way because I would never get around to fixing it properly if I didn't just do it the first time.)

I believe the best advice has been given. I think Dave nailed it in post #2, echoed by others, more or less. And, Mark, in post #4 rightly adds that if these are trailering wounds, and if the boat will be trailered again, then the trailer needs to be fixed. I don't think there is any disagreement about what should be done.

My only concern is in that third photo of post #1, on the left side. It doesn't look like any good news, over there.

What do you guys recommend for rust inhibitor, antifouling paint and do I need primer?
Rust inhibitor is for keel, primer and paint are for both keel and bottom

Is the centerboard metal? It looks like fiberglass from the limited view in your pic.

Mark
sorry for the confusion. The one in the pic indeed has a fiberglassed centerboard with water ballast. I'm also looking at another one with iron swing keel without water ballast.

If there is existing rust you’ll need to grind it away to shiny metal. You can use a phosphoric acid based primer to help make any remaining rust inert. For a primer for both keel hull I use Interlux Interprotect 2000e, followed by whatever antifouling is best for your area.
