I've thought of that myself, but don't trust that I would notice a problem until catastrophe! :eek:

But it does beg the question ... if you are actively adjusting the shrouds over a relatively small time period, why bother inserting the cotter pins until you are satisfied?
Scott:

You are probably right that there's little downside for sailing short times without pins securing the turnbuckles, but:

- I've just applied tef-gel to all my turnbuckles ... they now turn almost effortlessly compared to the high friction no-lube condition as before.
- It's likely to be several outings before settling on permanent enough rig tune to cotter pin them;
- High and gusty winds on San Francisco Bay virtually every outing = wide swings in rigging tension depending on the tack.

Realize that it probably won't happen without pins in, but just want to be sure that my settings won't self unwind during the sail.

I use SS wire, and a safety wire twist pliers. and have seen thin line used. (front stay) where I do tend to adjust it.

& ring dings on the side says.

(edit: self bonding tape over the rings on the side stays so they don't catch)

I'm with Mr. Bill. I used lock wire, aka seizing wire and tuck the end twist inside the turnbuckle so it won't snag anything. Very easy, cheap, and effective.

There was a thread recently about using SS welding rod. I went to a local supplier, found three sizes available and bought the needed diameter for turnbuckle holes.
I now have a lifetime supply, so if any of you are in Fla or you're planning a trip past the Ponce Inlet area, send me a PM and I'll supply you with a sample to try.

All of mine have stop nuts top and bottom and they work great.
Not a cotter pin in sight. Except on the clevis pins of course.

Then again, my rigging doesn't get adjusted often. (read, ever)
