Is there a trick to getting clevis pin under mast?

We raised the mast on my O'Day 272 today, but we're having problems getting the 'clevis' pin on bottom of mast to fit into 'shoe'. Is it tapered? Doesn't look like there are threads, and don't see any on the deck plate. But w/o taking a hammer to it, I don't think it will go in. What is the 'right way' to get this set. Without it, I think there is a real danger of the mast foot slipping off th edeck plate and crashing around our ears!

I'm still trying to figure out where all the lines go - on my T-23, things were much simpler...

Any/All help is appreciated.

Thanks

Needed a bigger hammer

Guess I just needed a bigger hammer... Last night it was getting dark/hard to see pin, and didn't want to screw something up, so didn't try to 'force' the pin.

Went over at lunch, and was able to drive pen through base of mast & deck plate.

As I begin to tune rigging, I know I'll have more questions than answers. Is there a recommended 'tension' to shoot for while tuning rig? Or is generic words like 'tight, but not too tight' something to shoot for. I won't be racing, but would like a good performance setup.

Re: Needed a bigger hammer

You can also try lining the holes up (deck plate to shoe) by inserting a drift pin, fid or awl (the splicing fid on a riggers knife should work) into the hole from one side then tap the clevis pin in with a hammer from the other. You can make a drift pin using a steel rod slightly larger than the clevis pin diameter and then grinding one end to a taper so that about 2" fit into the hole.

Thanks to all who offered suggestions. Being new to the 272, I didn't want to do anything that might break something or lodge it in such a way that it would be irrepairable... Mast is up, rigging is tensioned (what I think is sufficient), and was ready to go exept that now I've found a couple leaks in hoses/packing gland/water pump. Will remove water pump tomorrow when I have right tools. Need to clean hose attachment points and double clamp. One of these days...
