I took my 2002 H260 out of the water this weekend. I was a little surprised to find, what seems to be, flaking paint coming from my water ballast tank. I have only used fresh water in the ballast tank with 1 quart of lemon scented bleach each season. Any one have any idea whats happening here? Appreciate any info. Thanks, Bob Fliegel

You may be overdoing the bleach a bit. I keep my 240 in salt water, use about a pint of bleach (a year), haven't had any odors, or anything coming out of the ballast tank. Marc_B

...except it happened after my second season of owning this boat. If I took a picture it would look just like the posted picture. She spent her first 7 sears in salt water, and I've now had her in fresh water for two seasons. I don't add anything to the balast tank. I thought maybe it was "salt-water stuff" that got got loosened up and flushed out with the fresh water, but there was so much of it I found it hard to really believe.

Does chlorine attack polyester?
If so, that might be the answer to your question. Maybe try Lysol or a similar disinfectant rather than bleach.

Looks to me that this white stuff is fine shavings of glass probably from when the yacht was built. It is still quite a "new" yacht! Would it be worth getting the stuff checked for what it is?

1 tsp will disinfect 5 gallons of water. 1 quart will do 1000 gallons of water. Maybe a couple of oz. once a month might be easier on the surfaces...........

I think those figures are for emergency purification of water for drinking. I think even less bleach would suffice. Try just a little to see if there is a smell afterward. My first choice would still be Lysol. Won't attack polyester and it it a disinfectant by design. Smells a lot better out of the bottle than chlorine bleach.
