power boat?

Since I really have nowhere to go when I go sailing I can't ever see getting a power boat. I enjoy the sailing even if I am only going a knot or two I am not in a hurry to go anywhere. *pop

Past, Present, Future

I love my Malibu Skier! I've had it since 1987 and nothing feels sweeter on a calm, glassy morning than carving turns and driving a sweet performing ski boat. I'll keep it for as long as I can maintain it, but probably won't buy another. I might put one of those tower rigs on it for wakeboarding. Of course, I love sailing, too! We used to cruise around the lake on days when the wind was up and watch the sailers race around their buoys. I told my wife how I always wanted a cruising sailboat since I was small and how I always loved to sail. I always pointed out the sailboats on the lake that I liked. One day early last summer when we were anchored in our favorite cove for swimming, a really nice looking Hunter 26.5 glided in and set up this hammock like seat that was rigged off the jib halyard. We were fascinated and it really caught our attention. So my wife said ... "Lets go look for a sailboat and buy it ... my treat!" Man do I LOVE my wife!

It's Free

Why change when we have the best of both worlds: free wind power most of the time and enough engine to keep up with a trawler when needed, plus far better fuel economy under power. We're not in a hurry to get anywhere, anyway.

No way baby

The act of sailing isn't how fast you get somewhere, not even getting somewhere. It's about the act of sailing. Like taking a walk in the forest. I've had speedboats, ski boats, duck boats, fishing boats. Now I'm a sailor. I don't have a sail boat; I'm a sailor. Also; I never had a woman want to take a day in my flatty. BTW, anyone can run a ski boat.

why

In a power boat you are going somewhere, In a sailboat you are already there!

I switched (well not really)

I switched to a trawler from my Hunter 40. However, I still sail. I am a professional Captain on a schooner and sail it about five days a week during the summer, sometimes more. I do and probably always will love sailing. But after a cold daysail during the winters I really enjoy the warmth of my pilothouse on the trawler. It is also very comfortable and roomy with a fantastic view from inside and very economic(about 3 gallons an hour, not bad for 43ft @ 8 knots)

Sail to Power.....could happen

I grew up with power boats. My family had them from 14 to 33ft over 20 yrs or so. I got into sail by accident....I could afford to go somewhere in it! I've had 6 sailboats from an 18ft daysailor to my current 30ft cruiser over the last 30 years. I can forsee a time when I won't be able to do the physical work of sailhandling, etc due to advancing arthritis, etc, but I will be around boats as long as I can climb aboard. My powerboat choices would be a trawler, tug, or....gasp...a houseboat. In times when we can't travel far or have grandkids to entertain, I can see a houseboat in calm river or lake waters. My next 'toy' however, will be a 2 - 4 seat hovercraft.

We are all boaters.

I think it is ridiculous for people to argue about what type of power is better in a boat. Whether or not you burn fossil fuels or use the wind it does not matter because we are all boaters. I almost bought a trawler recently but then the fuel prices started climbing and I ended up very happy with another sailboat. It did not really matter to me! What was important was that I have a boat again and get back with the friends that I enjoy so much. I have yet to see a boater who is in trouble refuse to except help from whoever came along and offered a hand or a tow. I have yet to see a boater turn down a drink because of the type of that power someone has on their boat. Let the rest of the world have their stupid petty arguments as to who is better because of what they own. I like to think that we boaters are above that type and except everyone. So if you see "Hoosier Daddy" come on aboard for a drink sailboaters and power boaters alike. You will know me because I have the sailboat that does 8.5 mph with the Dux inflatable that will do 40 mph. I like to think of this as the best of both worlds.

I am a converted power boater to a sailor. I have a 24 ft hunter now with a 9 hp motor. I do miss the ability to get to shore quickly when the weather turns sour. How do you like the macgregor? Is it easy to trailor etc.
