Is their any wind on Lake Mead ,Nv.?

I have heard conflicting stories about their being no wind to great sailing . Whats the real story here? Is there wind or not? Whats the sailing like? Are there many sailboats? I remember seeing a few but then again I wasn't looking.I'd really ;ik eto move to the area but if there's no sailing...I'd really have to think long and hard about it. Thanks. Keep it up, Ctskip

Too Much Wind???

Every time that I've been to Lake Mead there was a lot of wind. My son boats there some and my grandson has been known to cry because it gets too rough.

I've seen some windless days in Spring, but

as a general rule wind comes up every afternoon. I prefer the Temple Bar area because from there you can go west into the wide open areas or east into the canyons to get out of the wind a little. I've not sailed on Mead, just powerboats, I've met snowbirds in the winter who have towed large water ballasted boats there for the season.

My experience is that there's either too much or none. You'll end up motoring a lot in a flat calm or punching into wind and chop.

Too damn hot during the summer days.

I have heard that it is too damn hot during the summer days (110-120). I think that a lot of sailing is done in the evening when the canyons start to cool and the wind actually pipes up.

My son lives in LV and it is too hot from the last of May until the last of september. A lot of 115 degree days adn it is hotter the lower that you go. We usually visit during the cooler months and we love the place. Once you know the lake night sailing would probably be the best option during the summer. It isn't that far to Lake Powel which I've heard is cooler. The wind can get pretty high for days at a time. The first time that we visited there was a dust storm for a week. My wife refused to drive our Toyota Pickup because she was having trouble keeping it on the road!!!! Most RV's pulled off the road. If you are from western OK and like the heat moving to Nevada shouldn't be that much of an adjustment. But many people get nose bleeds after a few days in the extemely dry air.

Yes and no

I've found Powell to be cooler in summer by several degrees. Every little bit helps when it's over 100. The wind is about the same. There is usually adequate wind velocity at some time during each day, however, it is gusty and changeable due to the canyons influencing the direction. I found the biggest problem with sailing is not wind but waves. The huge amount of motor boat traffic in the summer causes wakes that bounce off the canyon walls and mix in the middle with new wakes or old wakes and creates very choppy conditions even in the deepest water. The new low water levels aren't helping any as the shore is closer in many places now. Motor or sail, Mead and Powell are both worth taking a veiw weeks to visit and explore from the water. Take plenty of water, even in winter the air is extremely dry. Take spare props if you explore side canyons.
