Is the Oday 222 subject to massive keel failure similar to the 302 Oday

I recall that the 222 has an integrated hull and keel.

What maintenance should I be performing on the 222 Keel to keep it in good attachment to the hull? Are there keel bolts to tighten/ seal??

I don't think so. If there are, I've never seen them. My keel has held up great so far. My friend's Tanzer 22 has had keel issues, but I don't know of anyone in my club who owns an O'Day that has had these problems.

Thanks Joe. You are the 222 guru!! I recall reading somewhere that the lead keel was poured directly into the fiberglass mold at the time of the 222 manufacture. I don't see any keel bolts- so do not believe there are any accessible keel bolts to tighten. Did I get that right??

As far a I know, there are no bolts. It's a pored keel. I think that the O'Day 27 is a pored keel also. Someone had asked about the OD 27. One of the guys in my club owned one and he said that it's a pored keel. I wouldn't worry about the keel on the 222. It's the chintzy rudder blades on most of the O'Days that bare watching. Even the spade rudders on the larger boats. My friend had to build a new spade rudder from scratch on his O'Day 27.

Come to think of it, the O'Day 302 has a wing keel. I remember going aboard a 302 at the Boston Boat Show in the mid 1980s. I was really amazed at how large the head was in that boat. The boat's interior was really great. One of the salesman who worked for the O'Day dealer that I bought my boat from, bought a new 302 and he loved it. I really don't think that the wing keels were all they were cracked up to be. because if they were, they'd be still putting them in boats today.

I believe they are still installing them....they are a good option in areas where the water can be shallow.....the 302 had a hydrokeel designed and built by a company in the Seattle area. O'day
did not design it as they did with the 272 which was designed by C.Raymond Hunt Assoc. in Boston. We just received brochures for the Sabre 38 and they still offer the wing keel.
At our lake in Wichita, Ks. the 2ft.-11 inch draft of the 272 makes it a dream machine...we can really enjoy the beautiful coves for anchoring overnight and dinners out. Pat Coulter

I stand corrected Pat. I helped a friend of mine deliver his 86 O'Day 272(not the LE) from Cape Cod to Bristol RI a few years ago and I was surprised at how little it drew as we motored into a shallow cove in the Elizabeth Islands. I really love the idea of being able to anchor in a shallow cove with my boat. The wing keel isn't exactly my cup of tea, but I can see where it has a lot of good advantages in a larger boat than mine.
