Is size of lettering for boat name critical?

I understand that for a USCG registered boat that all letters in the name and hailing port should be 4 inches high. If this doesn't really fit where I want it, am I crazy to go a little shorter? My capital letters would be 4 inches tall but not my lowercase letters. Am I asking for a big fine?

Some states have requirements different from that of the CG. Is it worth taking the chance over such a trivial detail?

if the boat is not documented than its a non issue. it dosnt require a hailing port, or a name! i beleive that most states require that the registration numbers on the bow are 3 inch. now in chicago, the harbor system requires the boat to have a name even if not documented.

Well while you might technically not be in compliance, a sort of honest attempt is probably way better than nothing.

I agree:D

registered boats must have the registration numbers no less than 3" tall.... in every state.

documented vessles must have the name of the vessel, and hailing port (city and state) marked on the hull in lettering no less than 4 inches tall...

anything less and you are not in compliance. you may get away with smaller lettering for awhile... until the one time your trip is ruined because you decided the law wasn't to your satisfaction....

a few years ago I saw a boat temporarily impounded until it was corrected, and the owner/operator was fined because he thought the law meant close to three inches tall should be good enough....

the authorities are kinda narrow minded when it comes to stuff like that.
