Have a chance at a Mac Venture 24' at a reasonable price...

Probably because it needs a new mast (mast damaged/missing)

What size mast does this boat take...?

Will some other make/model be a good substitute...?

The boat has 6 sails from original masting, will that make a difference on finding the proper mast...?

Quick answers appreciated, actual finding of mast can take time, once I procure the boat...assuming there are (reasonable) options available

I shall presume that you have both the damaged mast and the boom. The sails fit this combination. A somewhat taller mast will not hurt but shorter will. Exactly the same height will allow the use of existing standing rigging if it is still servicable.

Has the boom, but not the mast.... I did see on the BWY site that the boat takes a 3"x4"x28' mast...so at least now I know what to look for.. I still need to see boat in person to make an inventory of the available rigging ...

To avoid problems later, you're best off getting a mast that fits the boat properly. The sails will fit. The stays and shrouds will spread the loads to the hull so nothing is overstressed. The boat will balance under sail the way it's supposed to. Slapping in a replacement from any old other 24' boat (like a J/24 for example) and trying to make it work by simply shortening or lengthening the wires is not the way to go. Cutting or adapting a used mast (if you can't find a used Mac24 mast somewhere) so that it fits the boat properly will work much better.

The mast is the most costly singel part (a 3 x 4 from Dwyer is 25 dollars a foot new) and the most likely to be dammaged

old incomplete boats

My many years of experience tell me that older boats in poor condition with missing parts are usually not worth the effort. Better to look for a complete ready to use boat
