Is my new keel winch broken

Just got this brake winch on Amazon for my Mac 22 swing keel, tried it without any load on it, it turns clockwise fine (reels cable in) but won't turn counterclockwise at all (tried pushing handle in). Saw some YouTuber showing his exact model, his seems to fine both directions without load.

Am I missing anything? I Like this model cause the handle has offset and won't scratch the panel covering the winch

When I've bought trailer winches, I look for the words "reversible" on the package. Not all have those words, and they free wheel in one direction and ratchet in the other. Also all the reversible winches I have have a pawl you move to ratchet in the other direction - sort of like the one on a socket wrench. Very respectfully, I don't see "reversible" anywhere on this winch. I hope I'm wrong, especially at that price.

Yes that winch Rachets in both direction. From the product description there should be no action to switch for operating the crank from forward to reverse. Don't see why it should not crank both ways with no loads as the load is what activates the brake. I would contact Customer Service at Reese 800-632-3290.

Called their support, on hold for 45 min, no answer. Got replacement unit from Amazon, same thing, won't turn counterclockwise . I must be missing something. But this guys turns freely both directions

Have to be persistent, call at different times of the day. Their technical support working hours are 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM Eastern Time. You could try E-Mailing them at technicalservices@horizonglobal.com

The only other suggestion I may have is install in a work bench and put a strap and a load on it to see if the brake releases. I'm not familiar with that product and just like you it does not make sense to me that it would not work. If unable to contact them I would retun it and look for another vendor or similar product from another brand.

Attached cable, wound it a few around pulled cable as hard as I could, got it free up. Wtf. Made me spent hours digging online on brake winches, wormgear winches and watched tons Dutton lainson videos

Glad you got it. I had to get my winch handle bent when I replaced mine, it still rubs. I like the one you found. Nicely done.

My other options would be a) get a worm gear winch like the wg1500 below but the drive shaft would be facing down if you mount it to the top, unless you mount it vertically so the shaft faces the bow. b) get a Dutton lainson brake winch and their socket adapter
But I'm glad this one worked out ok.

I had read somewhere that the brake activates at a 50 lbs. load, glad you got it working.
