I am in the research process of purchasing a C30, and now read from a previous post that the C30 is a "vomit rocket"? Tell me it isn't so, I have been really excited about the C30 and it's ease of sailing, large roomy cockpit, not to mention the room below, easily accesed engine compartment, and reasonable cost compared to other vessels. I have been very pleased with what I had found about the C30 until I read the "vomit rocket" description. If it really is that bad someone let me know so I may make a better informed decision when time comes to finalizing a decision on the brand of vessel to purchase. Above all, make your answer honest. Don't just say they are a great boat because you own one, be honest. I need to know! I know your answer may be to sea trial one myself and make my own decision, but if it is true and they are the "Vomit Rockets," I will not need to make that "fatefull three hour cruise." Thanks in advance for all opinions in advance. Don Flowers Rockport, Tx.

Most popular 30' sailboat

Don, Have owned an 86 C-30 from 87 to 94. Now about to purchase an 88 C-30. Found it to be a truly comfortable boat inside and out. Sails beautifully though maybe not as stiff as some older heavier boats, i.e Ericson and Islander. The fact is the C-30 is the most popular 30' sailboat ever built. That should tell you something. Bottom line: If one is prone to seasickness then chances are you will get quizzy on anything that floats. I certainly don't think this is a problem characteristic of a C-30.

No bile 30.

I have been sailing my 30 for over 3 years. Haven't been sick yet nor any of my pax. I speak from experience, been seasick many times before on power boats.

nope, aint true

here on the Redneck Rivera we get some pretty nasty weather coming in off the Gulf. our C30 w/wing keel is far from being a vomit rocket! in fact my girlfriend recently commented while taking a 25kt breeze and 3 to 4 ft swells on the nose while motoring that she "rode like a long board with a cup holder"! yes, she is also a surfer! (the girlfriend, not the boat)LOL

Very kind boat

We have had our Cat 30 since 1995. Sailed her down to Mexico after getting bored with sailing the Channel islands off California. Have sailed all over the Sea of Cortez. She is an easy boat to sail, very sea kindly, stiff in a breeze. Just had her bashed in Hurricane Marty that destroyed the marina totally, sunk boats, smashed many. She was injured, but called Catalina and reordered all needed parts to repair her. Few manufacturers are still in business and parts must be fabricated. Catalina is there, parts are there, and advice is there, when you need it. That is a strong consideration for one buying a boat...support.

Think logically......

Think how popular the C30 is......if it were a 'vomit rocket' i seriously doubt it's popularity would be nearly as high. After sailing our C30 for 2.5 years, I have only been sick once (probably being my own fault) and love everything about her - the way she handles, the vast amount of space below and the good service from Catalina. Good luck on the water. Michael

C30 in TX for sale in near future

Don, Due to some family circumstances, I'll be putting ,my much beloved 1988 Tall Rig C30 on the market soon. If you're interested in seeing her when your house sells, she's up on Lake Texoma. Just put on a brand new Doyle main sail and I'm looking forward to trying it out this weekend. Email me at Sailtx1@msn.com Chuck

Sorry to scare you.

I am the guilty party. I have described my C30 as a vomit rocket. As I said before she has made those who thought themselves immune sick. Myself, I have never been sick on my boat. Queasy in rolling 6-8 foot ocean swells, yes. But I come up topsides and I'm fine. I don't regret my choice. She's roomy, easy to sail, durable, and apparently charmed (survived Fabian). I was speculating that the wing keel, being shallower, caused more of a tendency to induce seasickness than than a deeper fin might. Then again I have a friend who when his main blew out in the gulfstream on a solo finned C30 passage to Bermuda, spent many hours below sewing it up, he got quite sick. I think most people would. I apologize for the angst I caused. I think you made a good choice.

conditions may cause it

I have had a few passengers get sick, but I believe it to be the conditions rather than the boat. In the heat and lighter winds (e.g., after crossing the wind line) combined with at least 2-3 ft wind chop on a beam reach, the rolling can get too much. I normally avoid that point of sail for that reason, but one of the passengers wanted to "drive". I now make sure any new helmsman quarters either into or with the waves and not parallel to them. Ocean sailing

Sail any boat out in the ocean and sooner or latter someone will get sick. Ihave sailed my C30 for 25 years (including a 6 year south pacific sail to tahiti, australia and most of islands inbetween, and have been sick 3 times. It also the same for my lady.I have covered about 45,000 miles since launching PANACHE in 1976. p.s. HER bday is 10/28 TONY "PANACHE" driver and caregiver. C30s are a super ocean boat faster than most larger "cruisers"

Somemore Promotion

Particullarly for the Rockport and Corpus Christi folks: We just completed the Harvest Moon Regatta on our C30. Came in second out of eight in our Division and twenty first out of the whole 156 cruising class/no spinnaker (243 boats overall). Our time was better than many and most of the longer hulled competition. As you know from the weather activity, we went thru some pretty good squalls between Galveston and Port Aransas. While we got soaked, we did fine. Also, let me mention that we have a Fleet 10 chapter of the International Catalina 30 Association here in the Galveston Bay area and would certainly invite you all to join in. November 8th is our next activity - a rendezvous at Red Fish Island. Email Denny Fegan at sdennisf@aol.com for details.
