or am I dreaming? I can't wait to get my boat in the water. The only sailing experience I have is a sunfish in 1980 and a windsurfer in the mid 80's, but I eat, drink and sleep sailing. My buddy, gave me a 1982 Mac 25 that was in fair shape that was parked for 8 yrs. He said if I could pull it out of the barn yard I could have it. Well, I locked in my 4 wheel drive and hit the gas. Took me 2 hours to get it home. I've been cleaning it, replacing parts since fall. The spreaders should be here by Monday along with the cheek block. I revamped the trailer with new tires, lights and wire, and greased the bearings. Is it normal for me to dream of heading off to Bimini with my wife in a few years with an updated boat with a Solar stick installed? I get all the magazines, I'm on this site all the time, is it normal or should I see a doctor? I'm hoping to get the boat in soon. I bought a used main sail and have a few other sails to go with it. I bought a used 6 hp Johnson. I read Treka, and Journey of the heart, both excellent sailing books. Let me know if I'm getting in over my head. Thanks, Mac

No you ain't gettin over your head

you sound perfectly normal. Between now and launch day read "Wind In The Willows". When you set sail you can go anywhere you want as long as you get back before work starts Monday morning. I sometimes sail to Tahiti on a weekend and sail back on monday and go back to work. Some people will say that I can't do that. But if I want my destination to be Malakai then that is where I go even if I only have Friday afternoon to go there and back.

sailfantasa

Ahh, A classis case of sailfantasa obsession syndrome. The need to escape daily life and think of how things could be. It makes things like carreer, housing, and traditional responsibilites seem meaningless. The only cure seems to be actually going to bimini. Yet this often backfires and instead of being cured it escalates leading one to many other beautiful lands around the globe. Gosh, nobody on this board could possibly relate to these deep psycological issues. (winter is killing me and I can't wait to launch next week)

Ross, I think you mean Molokai, HI

That said, anywhere you want to go is fine with me as long as I can write it up. I was just in Hawai'i. It is spelled M-O-L-O-K-A-I. I have only seen it from the air unfortunately. Or Malakai, if you prefer. Mac, It is not you, it is all of us who live farther north who are dying to put their boats in the water. Glad to hear that you revamped the trailer. There was just a post about a MacGregor getting damaged when its trailer axle broke. Keuka Lake is pretty long and the hills are not as high as other finger lakes, if I am not mistaken. You also have Seneca and Cayuga lakes nearby with Lake Erie to the north. Watch out for localized winds/storms that will eventually blow up but enjoy your boat with your friends and family above all. I saw snow today. I thought that was over. Scheduled launch: 4/22/07 Still left to-do: paint bottom, finish thru hull fitting for Moor knotmeter, thermostat and engine tune up stuff, put everything back on boat. I am sure I am missing something.

We had a couple of hours of sun this week.

I opened the hatches on the H26 (on the trailer in the driveway)and sat in the rail seat with a glass of wine. Squinted a little and I was half way to someplace warm with white sand beaches. Normal depends on who you're talking to. I second the suggestion to get a copy of Wind in the Willows. Required reading!

a few things

First: it is compltely normal, and even encouraged, to dream of sailing to Bimini. However, for some, the wife changes the tone of the dream;) Second: NEVER see a doctor! Just think of all that sailboat stuff you could buy (or make a payment on) with that hard-earned money. Third: (just to tick you off) for me, launch day is this weekend! It'll be a little chilly, but I'll counter that with a little chili!

Great boat

My first sailboat was an old Mac 25. When i bought the boat, neither me nor my GF had ever even been on a sailboat in our lives. I read some books and the first time we EVER sailed we sailed from Gulfport, Ms. to Panama City, Fl. and back. I will never forget that 2 week vacation. We hit good and bad weather both, along the way and it was a great learning experience. We have had many sailboats since then, but the Mac 25 has a special place in my memory bank. I would sincerely suggest that you get on the Mac site. It is the most active and will also give you the best info on your particular boat and will put you in touch with literally thousands of Mac 25 owners. Congrats on your new love Tony B

I really feel for......

...all you folks who live in climates where sailing is a severely limited activity. Thankfully, those of us fortunate to live along the Gulf of Mexico enjoy sailing year round. While we do have a few days when cold weather keeps us in port, we aren't burdened with pulling boats for the winter or going through the rituals of boat hibernation...our boats stay in the water all the time. As much as I enjoy sailing, I would literally go crazy if I couldn't get my sailing "fixes" on a regularly basis. Go watch this sailing video while you wait for the snow to thaw.....and good luck! CalebD I pulled the spelling out of my head after

the second glass of wine. I guess I got close enough.;D When I watch commercials on the tube I see scenes of all manner of exotic places.. If I focus the camera lense on a small enough portion of the cruising ground I can get to then I can imagine that I am there. Example there is a half mile of sandy beach on the south side of the Sassafras River near the mouth where I can anchor in about 6 feet and watch the sunset across the bay. Almost as good as being in a tropical lagoon. I can get trapped in the doldrums almost any day in August with the air temp in the 90's and the sun drying everything and not a breath of air, watching the weeds grow on the hull, the crew going mad with boredom. ;) Edited to add; Dick dixon, read my post ! iI think it has already happened to me. ;)

Yes, you are in over your head!

Enjoy it! There is no cure for this obsession and frankly, who would want one? Dick-I am adding a link to the video I did. I don't think it is quite up to your standards (you are the master) but please check it out.

Yes, Mac...

... this is an affliction which only has one cure: more sailing. Getting through the winter is the low point in how the "disease" progresses. Do not look at flags, or wind vanes, or anything else that indicates wind speed or direction during this period as the consequences are severe. Be assured, however, that all your anxieties will pass in direct proportion to how much sailing you do once you get your baby into the water. And welcome to "Sailors-Not-Anonymous."

Thanks everyone!

for your support. I was driving my car this morning and looking at the trees bend in the wind and was wondering what it would be like on the lake. I can't wait, I'm ready to spend some nights on the boat, get up early and let the sails go, crank some tunes on and relax. Have a great Good Friday and a Happy Easter!! Mac

Have fun

Mac I read a story of a couple that sailed thier Mac 25 from Toronto to Australia. I bit cramped I would say but they made it. I started out in a '85 Mac 25 and they are a great boat. I sailed mine on the great lakes so I know it can take a pounding. I think you have gotten a lot of great advice so now the decision is yours. Have fun no matter what you do.

Don't Hide Videos

Dick & Princess OLT - please don't hide your great videos in the center of other threads- make seperate ones. Was scrolling down this one and found both of your links. They really brightened my day as I wait for above freezing temps to launch my boat. Mike T.

sTEVE IS THAT A 26 ODAY ANNIVERSARY MODEL i SEE IN THE PICS. I believe it is an affliction to love the sport the work and most definitely the serenity. Enjoy the boat sail it and enjoy it some more. I tend to work real hard on fixing cleaning and upgrading until it hits the water then my motto is 'IF IT AINT BROKE ....

Pricess of the lake

That is one great video. It really brought back memories of the beauty of Lake Superior and the Apostle Islands. It also evoked a flood of memories of boat drinks at Morty's and fish livers at Maggies. What a great area.

The video you posted, was that on a Hunter 34? If it was they are nice boats. The same type I have plus I have a Hunter 23 which I would like to sell. Tom

Thanks for the nice comments! I was reluctant to post the video in a seperate thread because I thought my attempt was rather amateurish. Yes, that is a 1985 Hunter 34. We owned it for 3 years and loved every minute of it. At the end of the season we moved up to a 1995 Hunter 40.5 Legend. The Apostles are a very special place and we just love it. I just had dinner at Maggie's couple of weeks ago when we were up there checking on the boat. No place else like it anywhere!
