or do others have this same problem. Like most I have a "to do" list. But it seems like every time I get something done and off the list, almost as if by magic, another item appears, sometimes two. Feels kind of like treading water. So far my only answer to this dilema is to throw the damn to do list away. And I don't want to do that. Am I all alone, or do others have this same problem.

simple solution

There's a simple solution to your problem: Just don't do any of the stuff. Since new tasks appear only after you have completed the old one, it's clear that you should follow the old, well-known saying: "Never do today what you can put off till tomorrow."

All old boat owners suffer. . .

the same fate. That is "old" as in boat, not as in you personally. Because I know your boat I can attest that it never ends. When I look at the spreadsheet that I created in 1998 I get really depressed. On the other hand Ladylove does everything I ask and need of her. All the way from westen Lake Erie to North Carolina and only two problems, actually one problem twice. And that was clogged fuel filters. Can't ask much more of that from a 1979 Hunter I suppose. As for "old" I have both issues, the boat AND me.

Not just you

It's like the old saying, one step forward, two steps back. I just work on what seems the most important for safety and seaworthiness at the time. Cosmetic and comfort issues are a lower priority. Manny

That approach

After reading the comments, I think that maybe John has hit the nail squarely on the head.

Boat math

I suspect that if a completed job spawns one new one, then an uncompleted task spawns three or four!

I had a list

I had a list I created over the winter and now I can't find it. Guess that's a good thing!

I am always amazed

at how something about 30 ft long and 10 ft wide can create so much stuff to do. Engine stuff, hull and topsides stuff, galley stuff, head stuff, electronic stuff, stuff stuff.... And old pro once told me that there are just too many "systems" on the average inboard and no one can really keep up with all of them. He went on to say the best you can do is stay even by "oiling what squeaks".

That is the way it works

there is aways something to do and in the middle something else strings up.

Have Fun Keep the List Short

Owning a boat should be fun. If it seems like a chore instead of a great toy you are doing something wrong. Every time you go to the boat and you see something that needs to be done ask. Is it a safety issue??? If it is a safety issue then you should probably do it. If it isn't a safety issue the next question is would I rather go sailing or work onthe boat?? It does no good to have a "perfect" boat that you do not enjoy.

I have discovered a way to keep the list small

I have discovered a way to keep the list small. I carry mine on a slip of paper about 2 inches by 4 inches. It seldom goes over 8 items and most are just simple items. I have downsized from a 33 foot ketch to a 25 foot 1981 hunter. The outboard takes care of itself it seems. The boat has 2 thruhulls both above the waterline. It is so simple to keep. I love simplicity. My recent cruise of 3 weeks only added two items to the list. A better topping lift and better ice box. I now have a coleman marine cooler and adjustable topping lift. Life is simple.

My boat is 32 years old.

The "To do" list never ends. Im replacing stuff regularly that is between 20 and 30 years old. In time everything will have been replaced. By that time, some of the stuff I replaced will then be 10 or 12 years old and it will need replacing. The only solution is to buy a fully loaded new boat, work out the bugs in the first few months and then relax and enjoy for the next 5 to 7 years. My final boat will be a fully loaded MacGregor ....brand spanking new. Tony B

Jim, your confusing to do lists with

a honey do list. :) I only consider the to do list as things for the boat. Honey do lists cover every thing else. Boat must come first. Most of mine is things I want to do, not that are really necessary. And I can still sail at any time. But have a bunch of interior stuff to do before the June cruise.

Keep your list Nice N Easy

I am working on a theory that you can't die until you finish everything on your to-do list, therefore wives and boats having entered into a loving (I hope) conspiracy to make sure it is never finished. Jim Kolstoe, h23 Kara's Boo

New Boat To-do List

I have a new boat to-do list. There is one item on it - find that old, long list. Safety and break-down avoidance first. Manny, has Cutless re-appeared? Pete

I'm learning to check the calendar

before scheduling items to knock off the list. Last month I scheduled to clean the bilge on one of my grandkids birthday so I had to postpone it. I think I'll reschedule it for mothers day.

Hi Pete

I haven't seen him but I am not at that marina anymore. We do have an attack goose here now that made a nest on a hose that someone left coiled on the dock. She laid a couple of eggs about two weeks ago and has been diligently keeping them protected. Sure is hard to walk by her. Manny
