I just received a notice that now my billing for the marina slip will be paid through DOCKWA. They will now hold my boat registration data, financial resource data, insurance data and all transactions between me and the marina.

It was one thing when you had to use DOCKWA for a transit slip transaction. Now, it seems that all of the boating transactions in the Puget Sound are under the data collection of DOCKWA.

What is happening in your waters?

It feels like DOCKWA is the new “BIG BROTHER” of boating.

Coyote point marina. San mateo. DOCKWA moved in last June. It appears that their focus is to sell you sail packages since they have your financial data. I do not care for this setup. I did not sign up with them and I pay cash for my slip fee. All documents that I provided to the Marina I wrote on them to not upload to DOCKWA. Unfortunately they already without my knowledge had uploaded my vessel size. I do not have access to my profile and do not know what they know about me.
These profiles are often sold to a 3rd party.
Do not upload a copy of your driver's license as this is how identity theft takes place.
The marina attendants not all know how to use this accounting system.

Big Brother and AI are a powerful association.

Marine Graph is Dockwa’s proprietary data layer (built over 11+ years) that powers its AI products. It aggregates transaction history from the Dockwa platform and Marinas.com: records on 800,000–900,000+ boats and 66–100 million nights booked across nearly 4,000 marinas and 450,000–500,000+ boaters.

A 2026 Dockwa blog post (“One Life on the Water”) describes a future personalization vision in which the system “knows the boat: its length and beam, where it lives, where the family has been before, the kind of trip they like,” can anticipate service/fuel needs, and presents the arriving boater to a marina as a known customer rather than an anonymous reservation. This implies the underlying graph retains rich, linkable operational detail even if external products emphasize anonymized aggregates. :yikes:

Your favorite marina, with its favorable cost from your visit 4 years ago may soon implement a “dynamic regional pricing model”. It may follow your journey. While notifying the future stops of your presence, share what you have been willing to pay for an overnight stay along your favored route. Oh boy, the joy of a unified AI system knowing you.

I don't know much about DOCKWA but Safe Harbor Marinas (Owned by Blackstone) has gobbled up all of the marinas in the Charleston area. Each of the smaller marinas still maintain their local look but the management is all Safe Harbor.

DockWA took over the Oak Harbor billings a year ago. The first I heard of it was a day when I went to the fuel dock for diesel. While I was filling, there was a large motor yacht filling up. After pumping a bit less than $800 of fuel, he pulled out his credit card and went in to pay. He was told that he would need to sign up for DockWA and pay through that because that was the only way they excepted payment. After looking at the web site asking for all of his personal info down to the 4th child's birthdate [sarcasm] he said that isn't going to happen.

I pulled out eight $100-dollar bills and laid them on the counter, [to the protest from the attendant of "We do not take cash payment"]. He then took a photo of the eight bills on the counter and said, "That fully covers the fuel so you will take it or call the sheriff but I have the photographic proof and this witness [pointing at me] that I paid. He then turned and walked away. :yeah:

I think SHM has gobbled up many marinas in the LI/ southern New England area too. They published a slick glossy publication detailing all the improvements they were making. And I do think they poured capital into some of their properties. As sailors on the budgeted side, we know that means hefty increases in prices.
I believe Blackstone is a major force behind the now bankrupt Brightline rail line in SE Florida. I t seems like these guys who were good at making money on Wall Street are bent on losing money in marginally profitable businesses.
The collection and centralization of data is making me increasingly uncomfortable too. If you read one of those terms of agreement, and they are pretty much all the same, you see that you are giving them wide latitude with regard to the use of your data. And you have no choice but to not accept. OK, if you have $800 of their fuel in your tank. But if it's needed medical treatment you probably have to acquiesce.
Put me in the Way Back Machine.

Photocopying or taking photos of currency is a against federal law. Why do they not know that.:banghead:

Best not to overthink the $800. fuel transaction. Once the fuel (or any other product) is "delivered" the merchant is obligated to accept payment in currency (in the US). That is where the legal description "This note is legal tender for all debts public and private" ends the discussion. Totally. If anyone tried to intimidate me that way, I would dial 911 before they could enter the digits. :) Local LEO's would get a laugh out of that visit.
That is also the rationale (other way around) for the method used by a retailer of fuel like Costco to not allow gasoline to dispense until AFTER I enter my credit card info into the pump control. They do not accept cash for fuel and their system is perfectly lawful.

Back to the "DOCKWA" thing... now I am Really Pleased to be a member of a smaller yacht club with our member-owned moorage. Drop in sometime if you wish to use your "recip's" :)

There is tremendous consolidation in the marina business. Blackstone only recently acquired SH. Blackstone is a private equity company which will probably follow the usual private equity playbook, highly leverage the property, take money out and let the place fall apart. SF owns some marinas and has an operating agreement with others.

My understanding of Dockwa is that it is a marina management system and not a marina owning or operating company. It operates a lot like Hotels.com and other travel booking companies. At least some Safe Harbor marinas use Dockwa to manage dockage and reservations, a case in point is Safe Harbor City Marina in Charleston. As I understand that business the City owns the marina and Safe Harbor operates the marina using DockWa management software. Last I heard, Dockwa offers software management programs from simple reservation systems to complete financial management of the marina.

When we were traveling the East Coast a few years ago we found Dockwa to be a great help finding slips. Over our 2 trips we booked slips about 200 times, having all our information in the system made reservations very easy and it could all be done online, instead making endless phone calls while trying to locate marinas on our route.

There are a few competitors to DockWa, including Snag-a-slip and SH's proprietary system.

There is no more risk to personal information by using Dockwa than there is by using AirBnB, Expedia, Travelocity, Hotels.com, Priceline and any of the other online travel agencies. Besides the only people whose information isn't on the dark web are those who were born this morning.

One of the things I loved about sailing in the way back, was the freedom. Other than my shot record, passport and vessel document, the US government didn't even know I existed. I learned very early in my cruising days not to give out our itinerary, as we were reported "lost at sea" a couple of times, because we found really cool places off the beaten path, and didn't follow that itinerary. A couple of times we returned home to visit family before the letters we had written several weeks or more before our trip home, arrived. I had to get my first credit card at 35, because one could no longer rent a car with cash!
I have no doubt that Dockwa sells your personal info, no matter what the contract with them states. As much as I would love to go back to voyaging, I'm not so sure it would be nearly as much fun, nor as "free" as it was back then. No visas required before arrival, or cruising permits while traveling about in a country. If you chose to, you could work in most places, but you had to choose the jobs with care. Commercial fishing was one of the jobs I preferred, and a pretty high paying one at that! Today, one could lose their boat and be looking at jail time, if caught working w/o a permit.

Yes: our marina here on Rock Creek in the Patapsco (Chesapeake) now uses Dockwa for billing. As far as I can tell, the marina hasn't been taken over by BIG MARINA INC, but they're just using Dockwa as a convenience for their accounting. The main downside I've noticed it that Dockwa is now bugging me to upload my boat insurance. Other than that: no big deal.

Regarding Dockwa handling transient slips, they seem to have lost at least one: Harbor East Marina in Bal'mer used to use them, but no longer. OTOH, HEMinB is definitely now owned by a large conglomerate: Oasis Marinas.

One of the reasons for uploading insurance is many marinas now require liability insurance for transient boaters. Besides protecting the marina and other boaters it serves as an indictor of the boat owners commitment to the boat and reduces the chances of the boat being abandoned in the marina.
