Engine manual says to use Type A fluid in transmission (have used Dextron II as it lists it replaces type A). Cannot find Dextron II and am told it is no longer being made and superceeded by III. Is it? Lots of III here. This is a Hurst transmission on a Cat 30. Just used up last of oil and need to get more.

Jack, the trick with transmission fluid is to simply not mix different types. We have the same Hurth transmission. I don't know what the PO had used, but I bought a jug of Dexron II. Drained the old fluid out completely with a turkey baster or syringe and hose (from the top dipstick), and replaced with new fluid. If IIIs an improvement over II, that's fine, just don't mix them either. Transmissions rarely leak or "use" fluid, it just needs to be replaced. The old stuff comes out dark dirty purple, the new stuff is clean light purple. Stu

Your assumption is correct. Dextron III is an improvement on, and now replaces, Dextron II. The latter is no longer made.

Thank you...that was the assumption down here. I was told II was no longer made, so III it is. Drained the transmission (oil sucker) and put in Dextron III today. Appreciate the responses!
