Has anyone been to Crisfield Maryland lately? I have seen comments that most of the stores/restaurants have closed. We will stay in Somers Cove Marina, but a nice place to eat would be good. Thanks. Ed H

Yes, and sail or take ferry to Tangier Island. There were a few restaurants when Hunter had their Rendezvous a few years back.

All I know is that it is very popular with boaters from Tangier who seek a watering hole.

My wife and I stopped last year and were only luke warm on Crisfield.

If you are going a bit further south we did enjoy Cape Charles.

Ed, Our feelings on Crisfield is just so-so. Most of the stores are closed and the restaurants that are open are only open on certain days and times. The marina is nice and so are the staff but there are many other town to visit on the eastern shore that have a lot more to offer. The best time to visit is during one of the festivals or special events. Chuck

Thanks friends... We decided to sail to Crisfield and will report on the trip next week. We visited it by car 15 years ago and want to see it again. As Chuckbear notes, I was concerned about shops being boarded up. I called the marina and asked this question- "We will be arriving Sunday afternoon; are there any restaurants open on Sundays or should we plan on preparing dinner there at the slip?" The marina responded by naming at least 3 restaurants that are open Sundays and informed me that a new brew-pub is there and it will be open on Sunday also. Keeping our fingers crossed.

We had visited Crisfield a few times over the years, last time about 5 years ago, and noticed it slowly deteriorating. Bad location, poor crab and oyster harvests, and lousy US economy have all factored in. It's a shame as the public marina is very large, reasonable, and may be far enough south for boats to winter in the water.

Good Times at Crisfield

We arrived Sunday afternoon as planned and were very impressed with the marina facilities and staff. Stuck our heads into 4 or 5 restaurants and checked out their menus. Had a blast at the new brew pub (Chesapeake Brewing Co.) - sampled their newest creations, enjoyed the company of the brewmaster and owners, and watched football over a cold one. We ended up back there for dinner too... I had a 1/2 pound of picked and seasoned crab meat (like a crab cake, but just crab meat) that was fantastic.
We will definitely make return visits to this port.

Thanks for the Conde` Nast traveler review of Crisfield. Sounds like there is life left in her yet. Good to know!
