...I am going to put in an electric head and will run some 14 gauge and some 10 or 8 gauge wire. I notice that much of the wire already in the boat runs through the plastic flexable conduit that is slit along the side. Is it necessary to use conduit every time you add additional wire such as adding this electronic flush head or can I just run it without? Thanks.

no conduit, low voltage

the low voltage 12 volt wire can run free, on my boat, hunter ran the corrugated tube to keep the wires neat were they were showing but did not use it under the bulkheads. make sure you run a heavy enough wire most heads that i looked at draw many amps. if in doubt go larger mike burnham harbor

Conduit protect the wire from mechanical

injury it also causes a reduction in the current carrying capacity of the wire because it traps the heat. The demands of the head will be intermittant so just using the recommended size for the load and length will be fine.

Exposed wiring

should always be protected. There are many options, from the split mentioned in another post to several types of flex or wraps, or even self adhesive surface mount. Check out Home Depot, they have a lot of options, and they're not too expensive.
