Is a crash landing ever 'normal'?

Well, I am sorry to report there has been zero improvement in the docking ability of this powerboat. Since September, when I started this tread, we have only seen him once, and there was no conversation and no issues.

Yesterday we arrived at our boat about 1:30 to see his boat was out of its slip. Judging from the huge red BBQ sitting there we guessed he was hosting his family and they were out for a little spin around the marina. We thought it would be great to get our boat ready and out of there before he arrived back but no such luck. Immediately I saw him coming down the inner channel and making an awkward approach to his dock..... Way too fast as usual. We scooted down below, not wanting to ruin another day for him, and hoped for the best. I had high hopes as he seemed to slow down as he turned left into the slip, but ultimately he bounced off the starboard side, as he over-corrected and seemed to punch it into forward about that time... and I closed my eyes. Crash, he hit the end of the slip directly across from us and I could see the boat bouncing from the hit. My husband was at the V-berth hatch and said it was amazing…said he never heard reverse at all. Pretty quickly they got the BBQ going with a big black cloud of lighter fluid to start things off. After enough of that, we readied our boat as quickly as possible and got out of there. As he grilled, we released the docklines and I started backing out. When I looked forward, He had his cell phone held up sideways and was videoing our exit. It wasn't a quick snap of us, it was a long obvious video. Lucky for me it was a perfect exit so at least I won't part of YouTube shorts on embarrassing docking skills.

So, my question ..........why would he want to video us???

The answer is so obvious, he wants to study a perfect launching so he can improve his skills! I truly have no idea why he was doing that.

If it were me, I think I might be looking to change slips.

If you can possibly stand this person's company, perhaps offer to take him out on your boat, so he can video the entire sailing process, start to finish! Sounds like you could set a new course for him and save his yacht in the meantime!

In Order:
1. we love our slip and all surrounding close neighbors and entire dock really. It's calm and good people and interesting boats...with this exception. Since we see him so infrequently we just avoid upsetting him.
2. Wow, maybe that's it. It seemed to be me at the wheel that fascinated him...... I didn't see him capturing my husband.
3. Great thought, but I could not summons that kind of courage.

I love my slip too. I think you apparently only see this dude once per season, so that seems a tolerable limit.

When I was teaching my kids to drive I stressed the LAG rule. (Let the Asshole Go). This served me and them well and is a rule you should adhere to also. Bottom line is don't go out of your way to apologize, don't taunt, don,t engage. Some day he will meet another of his kind and they will cancel each other out.

Definitely an attempt at intimidation. What an a-hole. :) I said worse out loud here at home but I won't type it here. :D

Shoot, that was my gut reaction too. I am so not that way that I dismissed it immediately, figuring there probably was something logical. But reading it, I feel certain that was it. Yuk, what a jerk.

I hear that it might sound like I'm whining, but my point was that we have not seen him much and have been very careful to stay clear so we don't have any problems. So, as we got our boat ready to leave, we were quiet and quick. So for him THEN to stop what he was doing walk over and hold his phone up so that I could see him doing it, it really disturbed me. So, yes, there really is no other explanation other than intimidation. Thanks very much for the gut reaction.

What this guy needs is far more sinister than consternation!

I would hate to see what his vehicle looks like, if he believes in bump docking I can only imagine how that translates to parking his vehicle.

Why make something negative of it? Let it go. He is who he is. You cannot change him or educate him if he does not want it. You can offer. He can refuse. I would not make negative meaning of his taping you. There is no point to it. It does not change who you are or need to be: kind, generous, and caring. At the very worst, be indifferent.
If you think he is driving drunk, call the authorities. If he is damaging vessels or property, call the dockmaster.
