Im looking at a 1978 Cat. 30, tall rig with a 4' 5" draft and am wondering about Catalinas reputation as far as quality, sea worthiness and general cruising boat. Just missed out on a 29 Ericson so is in the same league? Thanks

HHMMMMNNN

I have had my boat out in 6 ft sea with waveperiod of 2-3 seconds. It was in Pensacola Bay. I have a 1977 and I was worried sick. There was a "WALL" of water coming over the boat each time the bow went through the wave. The cockpit drains did nicely, but the sound of it just felt like it was goiing to break in half. Other than that I couldn't tell you. I do love my boat though. PLENTY OF SPACE in and out of the cabin.

Pretty solid boat

We have been on Lake Erie in our 88 Catalina 30 in 50 knot gusts and 7-8 foot waves. The old gal took it like a champ. The gusts were temporary due to a frontal system passing through but we see 5-6 foot waves and 25+ knot winds on the lake many times a year. Most times we don't venture out in those conditions but she takes that level of weather just fine. Last year we sailed 6 hours in 5 foot seas 20+ knots and had a great ride! I would not make an extended blue water passage in this boat because I don't think she is designed for this type of use. The 30 is great for coastal sailing or short jaunts. Just my opinion.
