Hi I am intrested in buying a 30ft Catalina boat. I am now taking sailing lessons with my 21year old son and would like to know if a 30ft catalina would be suitable for sailing on lake Michigan and in the gulf waters off the coast of Florida. I am sorry if I not asking in the right place but would apprecate some one with sailing knowledge giving me their opinion. My e-mail address is R STRAHLMAN@AOL. Thank You Bob STRAHLMAN

I have heard of them with an experienced skipper being sailed to Bermuda etc.

Catalina 30's in the Gulf

Bob, The Catalina 30 is really a great boat anywhere. I grew up sailing one in San Francisco and now sail here in the Gulf. I have a fin keel standard rig and it's great. The winds are light down here and the 30 is a great light wind boat. We regularly gunkhole around the islands between Sarasota and Marco Island. Regards, Dave Goldfarb dgoldfarb@swfla.rr.com

30ft Catalina-Perfect!!

Robert, I would think the 30 footer would be perfect for Lake Michigan and the Gulf. We sail our 27'Tall Rig in Lake Michigan out of Milwaukee and I wouldn't hesitate to sail it in the Gulf. In fact when my wife and I retire in a few years we are moving to Naples and will probably sell our 27 here and purchase another in Florida. So go for it and enjoy!!!

C30s are great boats. Keep an eye on the weather and you'll be fine! LaDonna

no problem

I've been sailing a 24' Hunter in Lake Michigan for 5 seasons. I avoid winds over 25 mph. I just traded for a catalina 30 which has been on Lake Michigan for several years. It's a more stable boat capable of handling much higher winds and adverse conditions. It has probably been on the water a lot longer than you or I have. It not only has survived, but it has thrived and continues to be in excellent condition. Just use a little common sense. And enjoy. Joe

cruizing

I sail out of Marina Del Rey, CA. I met a guy a couple of years ago that sailed his Cat 30 to Hawaii and back and from SF to Cabo San Lucus and back twice. He sailed single handed from SF to MDR. So the the boat must be seaworty. Catalina will tell you that they are build to high stanards. Have a surveyor check the rigging, etc.

I know you sail your Catalina 27 mostly on the Columbia. Have you ever taken or consider taking her out in the ocean. I sail the San Francisco Bay on my Catalina 27 and I know the previous owners used to take her out the gate down to Half Moon Bay and Santa Cruz. I am just wondering how you feel about Pacific Coast Cruising in the Cat 27.

Pacific Coast

I just got back from a wonderful week on my 27 going from San Francisco to Santa Cruz and Moss Landing, CA. I've previously taken it several times as far north as Bodega Bay (about 50 miles from SF) and South as Stillwater Cove (100 miles). As long as you as are careful to pick your time, Catalinas can do most anything. 27s have circumnavigated. I'm now reading a book (Stargazer's Diary - author Shirlee Sasenberry) written by a couple on a C30 who went from SF thru the Canal to Florida without incident. NO PROBLEM!!
