Is a 155 too much power

I am about to purchase a headsail for my 28.5-tape drive from UK- and would like to know what you guys think. It is going to be a passagemaker 2 -- A furling tape drive with a foam luff and a taffeta on the other side of the mylar from the carbon tapes. My question is this- Do you think a 155, 145, or 135 would be best for sailing in Corpus Christi, TX. The wind is usually 10-20 knots here and the bay tends to stay relatively flat--1-2 feet. All I have currently is the stock 110 which is pretty blown out, so it is hard for me too judge how easily the boat will be overpowered with a larger, but much flatter headsail. Any response will be greatly appreciated. Also, I have a asymetrical tri-radial spin for reaching which is less than a year old.thanks, ken matejka

Tender sailors

Ken:These boats tend to be slightly tender. I would think that an optimum size would be from about 120-130. You really want to have the sail totally unfurled most of the time. A furled sail is NOT going to sail as well as an unfurled, you are going to loose efficency.I would pose this question to your sailmaker and get their opinion too.

155 Too much

I have a 150 which is actually a 150 hank on converted to roller furling, foam luff etc. I would consider a 145 to be about right. No matter what, you will be reefing at 15 knts. I would also investigate a miter cut head sail so the furling will be more effective when partially furled. Also make sure your furler is also a reefer.Good luck

Hi Ken, we had a 1989 H28 with a 110. If it were..

my boat I would replace it with a 110. As we experienced these boats are very tender with a huge main for its size. I would also have it cut with a high clew for improved lee visibility. Those 135-150 genoa deck sweepers create a large lee blind spot. Terry

HUnter 28

I believe the HUnter 28 is not a masthead rig like the 28.5 and most likley has a larger main. The headsail on teh 28.5 is the driving force.

RE: 110 headsail

I put a 155 on last year .Next season I will be putting the 110 back on.If I had a 135 I would try it,had one on my last boat a Taxzer 26 and the 135 was my favorite sail.The 155 does not reef well too high from the deck when you reef to about 110, I find that the 110 sails the best for most conditions.All the best.

28.5 sails

Ken I have a 155 on my 28.5 and it works fine in 10 to 12 knot winds. if you have higher winds go with the 130. Happy sailing Craig
