Is a 12 hp Yanmar enough power for a C30?

I understand that catalina offered a 11hp engine as an option. How did it work out? Was it as grossly under powered as I suspect? A friend wished my opinion about the 12 hp yanmar for his C30. Any thoughts or experiences? gord hohert

Yanmar YSE12

I have been more than happy with my Yanmar. I generally cruise at 5.5 knots and can hit 6.1 at full power. I have a 12x12 three blade prop. It slows down a bit in heavey chop, but I never go directly into the waves. I'm usually sailing if it's windy. I'll be crossing the strait and coming to Victoria early May. The best sailing I know of is in the strait, other than BVI. Hope this helps. Sean S/V Carnaby Street

I'd go with the 18 hp

I replaced my old Atomic 4 last year with the Yanmar 2GM20F 18 hp model. The power in that motor is more than adequate in most conditions, but even with 18 horses I sometimes wish I had a little more power. I know Catalina still makes the C-30 and they install a 3 cylinder diesel (~25 hp I believe). When I replaced my motor last year the 3GM30F motor was an additional $1,000 and I didn't want to spend the extra cash. Now that the motor's in, I wish I did. I figure the life of the motor is going to be at least 15 years...if you spread the cost of the bigger motor out, it's only $67 per year more. If you're going through the expense & hassle of a repower, I'd get the largest motor that your budget will allow. Just my 2 cents. Allen Schweitzer s/v Drambuie, hull #632

Go with as much HP as you can afford

The C-30 1984+ comes with a 25hp motor standard. That's what I have on my 1988. This is usually more than enough power for all conditions. C'est Sea Bon C-30 #5367 Marina Bay Qunincy, MA

YSB-12 PUTT - PUTT - PUTT

We have a Cat 30 which has/had a YSB-12 Yanmar in it. The engine is in the process of being removed for a total rebuild as it seized last summer. We considered going to a new 2GM20 but by the time we finished it would have cost approx $12K. As memtioned by Sean we also get about a 5.5 knot cruising speed with only a 12 inch two blade prop. I certainly feel the 12 HP is to small but it does/did get the job done. I will also be adding an outboad bracket to the stern with a 10 HP outboard just to make sure I get home if the diesel quits again. Cliff Carter Cat 30 #598 Oak Bay Marina D38.

nivritti - No Wind!

Nivritti I thought I must reply to your comment. Here was the situation and why I will NEVER get put in the same situation. 1. Diesel died in the middle of Haro Strait, a major shipping channel for ocean going container ships and on that particular day a US nuculer sub passed with a few hunder feet of us. 2. Not a breath of wind. 3. Tide was taking us towards an exposed reef of jagged rock. 4. I took to the 6 foot fiberglass dingy with oars and towed the 10,200 lbs of saiboat away from them. 5. Sails are still up and a breath of wind passes by and the sailboat is off with me still in the dingy being towed backwards. (Wife is at the helm laughing herself to death at the sight.) 6. Ran out of wind again and tide is taking us to shore, back to the dingy again. 7. Tow us into an area of wind and we zig zag along the coast towards our marina and enter the harbour. 8. No more wind. Into the dingy again but tide is to strong and we are headed towards the rocks. 9. Commercial crab fisherman comes past but refused to help, to busy! 10. Sailboat passes by and comes in close to see what is going on but will not assist. 11. Cell phone call to the marina for a tow. Refused as they do not have insurance for towing. 12. Keel strikes bottom just before we are about to hit the rocks. 13. Numerous persons on the docks watch but no assistance from any one. 14. Sports fisherman returning to the marina stops and gives us a tow to the fuel dock. After a day like that I will never be put in a similiar situation as there is nothing more gut wrenching than having your pride and joy being taken into the rocks and there is nothing you can do about it at the time. So Nivritti you can see the reason that I am putting the outboad on the stern. Or we may just purchase a zodiac with outboard as our tender. Cliff Carter Cat30 "PlusOne"
