I am looking at rigging our baot for a spinaker halyard. The stock Irwin 37 does not appear to have a bail to attach the spin halyard to. If you have a block attached to the masthead for a spin halyard how is this done on your boat?. What size is the attaching hardware and block?? Pictures would be great but probably require very long arms.... Tim

Spinnaker crane

just installed a spinnaker halyard on my 38 Citation....no crane existed so we installed one on the mast head. then went internal downt he mast and out to a cleat about 4.5 feet off of the deck. caution if you have furler as the halyard can get fouled when deploying or pulling the jib in.

My solution

I added two manufactured bales for additional halyards at the top of my 37's mast. Each was made from 3/8" SS round Bar stock bent in a "U"Shape, and welded to a 3/8" SS Plate, so that each went port and Stbd on each side if the headstay. The center of the plate was cut away so that it would slide around my anchor light which comes out of the center of the mast head. The plate was then drilled and the mast top plate was drilled and tapped so the plate cound be bolted in place. I am fat and had help of a much lighter guy to pull it off, but it was all done at the dock with the mast in place. Before you start go aloft and find out what your mast head looks like and make a cardboard pattern. Joe Shirley

Success, sort of

Thanks for the replies to this post. I have taken your advice Joe and made a template of the masthead and will fab a plate from aluminum that can be bolted to the masthead top plate. We are doing this with the mast up as well. In the mean time we went out for our annual boxing day sail and flew the new chute from the jib halyard. HEpled reinforce the idea that this will be a good idea. Tim S

Another Project

You have given me another project to do while the rig is down. Have to wait for the weather to warm before I start thought. TOM
