Good for you! Have some friends in BVI that did not fair so well - boats lost. Fortunately the death toll down that is as little as it is, that's a blessing. Could have been much worse. The property is replaceable.

Good news Nick. Haven't heard about our boat but condo is OK and we have electric.

I can imagine that you are elated for your good fortune! Hopefully, your friends fared as well. Are those anchors in your lawn for the docking lines? That looks like a secure set-up.

Looking like the Cuban keys and lower US keys took one for the panhandle. Really rubbed her down.

That's great news, Nick! Although there are many photos to come today, I haven't seen many big piles of boats. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Glad to see it Nick! An acquaintance had his boat on the hard in Puerto Rico. From the reports, he doesn't know if he is at the top or bottom of the pile...

It never ceases to amaze me that most of us can write off our pride and joy in an instant when faced with the threat of a hurricane. I have said to myself in more than one occasion " there is no way the boat is going to survive this storm". I don't know if it is a defense mechanism to be able to cope in case of the loss or if it is a surrender to the forces of nature. We do all we can to secure them but rather than being optimistic of the outcome we are merely hopeful even when the odds are truly on our side.

we also dodged the bullet with the storm,. tried for two days to get the jib down, could not get it to slide out of the furler. Even went up the mast to see if something was fouled up. Tied it up reall good and she stayed that way, lucky.

Looking at the media coverage, I thought it amazing on how many dodgers I saw: How many mains still on the boom: jibs still furled: jet skis still floating tied to dock, etc. you get the idea..Do people just give up and que sera sera? Admission: I have never been in this situation and also the media coverage is just a snapshot...

I stayed south of Daytona at my dock. Did my best macrame work
on the lines (15), stripped the canvas, all sails and removed the boom and went to the condo to wait it out.
Next morning, after a 8 foot tide rise, I found her as I left her ... In Place and Unscathed!:wow3:

Personally, IF the timing had been slightly worse, I would not have made it down to my boat to get her ready. It's a 12 hour door-to-dock drive for us if we only stop for potty breaks and fuel. We left for the boat early when it looked like Irma wasn't going to follow directions and make the turn she finally made.

It's our first big threat with the big boat. We learned we need 3 days advance warning. A day to get there, a day to prepare her and a day to "Get Outta Dodge". Going into harm's way may be a great deterrent for some owners. "Might spill the martini!"

Great news Nick, I am really happy for you. Our condo in St. Pete was also spared (though we haven't been back there yet), and the boat (16 lines, strong slip, well sheltered small basin) came through with only a ripped out cleat. For us, a bit of fiberglass work is not too bad a price to pay to still have a boat.

We too had written the boat off (well everything really) when we evacuated to NC.

Chip... Great news. It is so rewarding when a good plan comes together then works out as planned.
Sail on..
