I hope we didn't lose any S2's to Irene. I wasn't able to get Tripleplay hauled. Luckily Irene broke up and only saw 40mph with gusts of 60 for just a few hours.

We thought that we were really in for it here in the Hampton Roads area of Virginia. I had to leave my 9.2 in the marina and figured I was going to end my boat ownership days after only four months. The marina has floating docks with pilings about 10 feet high (Boat US, I think, recommends pilings nearly twice that). Our maximum wind gusts were 67 mph, which, I suspect hit just about the time I was checking the boat for the last time Saturday, coinciding with the height of the storm surge: 7.5 feet. The top of the pilings were not much above my knees. Got some damp cushions in the cabin on the windward side, but that was it. I'll be bugging the forum soon about replacing the Lexan ports. My kids up in Richmond seemed to be hit harder than we were.

My 9.2C faired very well - she stayed tied in her slip at the marina. I added extra lines to the pilings and dock and wrapped a line around the mainsail cover (the jib was not on). The only 'damage' was the stitching on the zipper of the mainsail cover came undone but that had started before the storm. Now if I could only get electric back at my house....I think I would be better off on the boat now than in the house with no running water, lights, cooking, etc. Fortunately there was no damage to the house even though I had numerous trees uprooted.

Wow...

...Bug that was a close call. Only a couple of more feet left on those pilings! Gary, sorry to hear about the trees. We had a lot of trees damaged by a big ice storm and still have some to take down. If they don't fall on your house your insurance likely won't pay enough to make it worth the subsequent rate hike!

@ John -- I noticed your boat at Leeward, I just sold the Beneteau that was two slips down from you. We are going to be keeping our S2 on the other side of the penninsula at Belle Isle.
Leeward is a pretty nice place to sail out of and if you like casual racing, go to www.whiteshoal.info. The White Shoal Sailing Club usually meets on Sunday afternoons and races over on the other side of the bridge. I've done a few races with them and really enjoyed it -- it's informal and just for fun, so basically a chance to go out and sail with some other boats. I'll miss sailing with those guys!
Best of luck!

I work near Belle Isle, at Phillips Elementary, in Hampton. I've thought about keeping the boat there. If I ever get kicked out of the house, that's what I'd do, as it'd sure be a nice bike ride to work. Sorry we didn't meet. I'll check out that club.
