Current plans call for an Ireland holiday this year. Being a boatnik family, I am looking into some Irish boating options. We kinda like the idea of chartering (hiring as they call it)a motorcruiser or barge. I've also found two sailboats for charter on Lough Derg (http://www.shannonsailing.com/html/lough_derg.htm). How long should would you "canal" for if you were there two weeks? Any charter company you can recommend or suggest avoidance? Or should we sell the farm and stay for Calves Week? May St. Patrick bless you with fair winds (warm fair winds) and an early spring if you respond by the 17th!

Kinsale, on the Southern coast, is a nice port to charter. Go online to find them. It is also a nice day trip to Kinsale if you can make it. They are the "Newport" of Ireland. They are actually the "twin" city of Newport, RI and they are also known as the "Restaurant capital of Ireland". I've been there twice and it is utterly fantastic. As I said, you can charter there, but you'll have to search the web for a company. Have fun while you are in Ireland. I wish I were with you! As far as I know, going up the Shannon River from Shannon is a great trip. I ran into a guy at the car dealer once, and he said he had done it and loved it. Taking a power boat would be different, but you can pull up to any town dock and spend the night, or fish, golf or shop. It sounds like a wonderful trip that I'd like to try some time. If you have chartered back here, then it's not much different there. Just make sure you get a better deal on the money conversion (Euro/dollar).

I looked into this last year. Thought cruising the canals in France might be fun. Contacted the charter company listed below. They also offer canal boats in Ireland. I have received plenty of information from them. NOT a recommendation just a place to start.
