New AM/FM/DVD players have a dedicated mp3 input. Normally it supplies power and keeps your ipod charged. Ours, which is 2 years old, has DVD audio and video outputs which means we can play movies on a small flat screen TV. Others are "Satellite Ready" but I think you need to purchase and install you own antenna. These aren't that expensive.

Go to www.crutchfield.com. They have a gaggle of hookup options for all sorts of different devices. Keeping your iPod charged by a direct hookup, which an aux will NOT do, is what you want to do if you're buying a new stereo for the boat.

I use a Griffin FM transmitter for iPod that has an undocumented international mode that can transmit below range used in the US. Most "car" radios can also tune below the range used in the US. By selecting a frequency below the range, you can avoid interference with US FM stations. That's what we use on our boat.

This link describes how to access that mode.

If you are replacing your head unit then I recommend the Sony DSX-M60. The face actually flips down and you can plug your iPod in an internal tray. This charges the iPod as well as connects it to the unit. Your songs are displayed on the screen of the unit. I find this helpful as it's self contained and I don't have my iPod rattling around the cabin.

Oooh! I like this a lot and it sounds perfect. Thanks CaptnKev!

Forrest-that is along the line of what I have been thinking. I was going to replace the on board stereo this season anyway and will make sure to get one with an aux input. I guess if I do it that way I just have to find an adapter that I can use in my dc plug in to charge the Ipod while away from the marina.
Thanks for your help.
Hey POTL, now you know why I dumped my CD player and went to a Fusion Audio system. The faceplate opens up, and your Apple product slides in. Keeps your player charged up, but the controls are on the face of the Fusion stereo. Sounds great, and no more CD's on the boat. I use an 80GB iPod Classic, has a couple of thousand songs, and am using about 10% of the memory so far.

PrincessoftheLake, Glad to meet you! I replaced my onboard unit with a Fusion Stereo. Ipod goes into the unit, charges, and the big screen actually shows the same info as the screen on the ipod. Did not have to enlarge existing mounting hole, uses same connections. Installed in about 15 minutes.

No problem princess :) and Tim that particular head unit also has a regular auxiliary input so you can surf Pandora or read the bios just as you described and still have the option of stowing your iPod in a safe place. It even has a little reminder beep if you leave your iPod inside it after turning it off so you don't forget it.

I have been thinking about upgrading to a DVD player. We do not need a CD player anymore as that is a dying technology. We presently play DVDs from our onboard laptop. I am just waiting for the in-dash DVD player prices to drop more and find one that I like.

I love music but I have never had it or missed it on the boat. I wonder if that will change when I'm aboard for longer periods.

Absolute silence, a little moan of wind in the rigging, the distant cry of loon, it doesn't get much better than that.

What ever you buy whether it's a cable for the aux port or a FM xmitter. Make sure it list that it's supports the IPOD Touch. Not just IPOD. The connectors are different and will not work. Also I tried the cassette converter also. You will only get mono. I tried it with my touch. Also you can only charge a Touch with a USB cable. If you are going to replace your radio, check with West Marine. The have a model that will work with a USB connection.

Bill, Some of us are Old School and don't have those

OK Princissofthelake is not the only blond here. Just so I understand, are we trying to play music stored on an Ipod over the boat FM radio?
Don't they have AUX input or a USB for that already?
Or am I blond?
I know that I can take a USB geekstick, load music on it and stick it into my radio and it plays all day on one stick.
Would love to have an Aux or USB. I have a cheap FM transmitter that is crystal clear.

POTL your idea will work fine.

Roger, I agree when it comes to sailing. But we love to relax to some of our favorite tunes at anchor. Not always but sometimes some appropriate music while watching the sunset is the icing on the cake.

I have the Monster brand cigarette lighter/FM transmitter that I use on my boat and was happy to find out it works better on my boat than in my truck. I use it with 3rd gen 60GB iPod & 1st gen iTouch.

I also use it with a 4G iPhone, the down side is it is not "compatible" AKA does not charge the phone while playing but functions fine when I stream from the web.

Seven degrees of blond.

Ok ladies you've probably heard these before, but you may not remember.

FIRST DEGREE
A married couple was asleep when the phone rang at 2 in the morning.
The very Blond wife picked up the phone, listened a moment, and said
'How should I know, that's 200 miles from here!' and hung up. The
husband said, 'Who was that?'
The wife answered, 'I don't know, some woman wanting to know if the
coast is clear.'

SECOND DEGREE
Two blonds are walking down the street. One notices a compact on the
sidewalk and leans down to pick it up. She opens it, looks in the
mirror and says, 'Hmm, this person looks familiar.'
The second Blond says, 'Here, let me see!'
So, the first Blond hands her the compact.
The second Blond looks in the mirror and says, 'You dummy, it's me!'

THIRD DEGREE
A Blond suspects her boyfriend of cheating on her, so she goes out and
buys a gun. She goes to his apartment unexpectedly and when she opens
the door she finds him in the arms of a redhead. Well, the Blond is
really angry. She opens her purse to take out the gun, and as she does
so, she is overcome with grief. She takes the gun and puts it to her
head..
The boyfriend yells, 'No, honey, don't do it!!!'
The Blond replies, 'Shut up, you're next!'

FOURTH DEGREE
A Blond was bragging about her knowledge of state capitals. She proudly
says, 'Go ahead, ask me... I know 'em all.'
A friend says, 'OK, what's the capital of Wisconsin ?'
The Blond replies, 'Oh, that's easy. Its W.'

FIFTH DEGREE
Q: What did the Blond ask her doctor when he told her she was pregnant?
A: 'Is it mine?'

SIXTH DEGREE
Bambi, a Blond in her fourth year as a USC Freshman, sat in her US
Government class. The professor asked Bambi if she knew what Roe vs.
Wade was about..
Bambi pondered the question; then, finally, said, 'That was the decision
George Washington had to make before he crossed the Delaware .'

SEVENTH DEGREE
Returning home from work, a Blond was shocked to find her house
ransacked and burglarized. She telephoned the police at once and
reported the crime. The police dispatcher broadcast the call on the
radio, and a K-9 unit, patrolling nearby, was the first to respond.
As the K-9 officer approached the house with his dog on a leash, the
Blond ran out on the porch, shuddered at the sight of the cop and his
dog, then sat down on the steps. Putting her face in her hands, she
moaned, 'I come home to find all my possessions stolen. I call the
police for help, and what do they do? They send me a BLIND COP!'

Anything optical is a dying technology. Don't bother with DVD's any more than you would with CD's. Just buy/rent the movies online. You're probably already playing your tunes from a computer/iPod/whatever. It works great for movies too. If you have disks, just rip 'em and put them all on a hard drive (another dying technology.) If you already own it it's free and legal anyway.

Does iPod have and 8-track tape app?
How about a Japanese transistor radio app?
or
A VCR app?
I know it can't burn CDs or DVDs because it does not have a door for them. Honestly I don't see what the attraction is. They don't even play cassettes
