iPad with Navionics or other Nav software

I currently use my Droid phone with Navionics software as back-up navigation. It's more accurate than my chartplotter. I'm now considering getting the iPad mainly because of it's size and battery hours (10).

I understand that on the iPad (but not Droid) Navionics only displays north up, rather than head up. Can anyone confirm this? And, if anyone uses these combinations, is that a problem for you? Are there other navigational apps for the iPad that anyone recommends?

I also understand that once it's downloaded to the hard drive, one does not need to be within cell tower distance for the sytem to work perfectly. Is this correct?

Will appreciate all suggestions and recommendations.

I have an 1st gen ipad with navionics and I can't recall if there is a setting that can be modified to display the heading up, I'll have to look tomorrow. It's never been a problem for me as I prefer north up.
As far as not being within range of cell towers, you are correct, you do not need to be in range (unless you need to download another map). But I did spend the extra cash for the 3g version specifically because it has built in gps. The wifi only version of the original ipad did not have that feature. As far as the new ipad I don't know if both 3g and non 3g versions have gps.

Checked and couldn't find a setting for heading up, but maybe if you hit the gps "arrow" twice it may switch how it is displayed. Couldn't really test that sitting at home a great distance from water... I'll try this weekend if I can. Stay tuned...
