Any experience and recommendations on Ipad navigation apps, and the functionality of Ipad GPS on a sailboat? I s full time wifi or cellular connection required, which makes this pretty unusable?

The old iPad doesn't have true GPS and the new ones are supposed to have it. Either way, you can add GPS to an iPad or iPhone using a Bad Elf GPS dongle.

The navionics app is what I use on my iPhone. It has to have the internet connection to load and install the program, but after that all it uses is the GPS. The maps are stored in the phone's memory. I bought the Southern Lakes version for $9.99 and it has all the southern lakes of course, but it also has the southern coast and intercoastal waterways and bays... Everywhere I see us sailing in the near future.

I have iNavX on my iPad.
It works without cellular or Wi-Fi. Uses the GPS in the high end iPad.
Maps are downloaded permanently into the pad, so everything works independently.
I've used it in the Carribean, the Pacific Northwest and am about to take it to Mexico. Works great!
Don't replace your plotter with it, it's not waterproof.But makes a great backup and planning tool.
Also works with Aye Tides to give tidal data and with Shipfinder as a sort of AIS but Shipfinder needs an Internet source.

So which is better, Navionics or iNavX? Navionics is cheaper, but has bad reviews, iNavX has great reviews but is costly. Any advice on which to buy?
