Inverters - what do people use them for?

The Aero Press is a MUCH improved version of a french press. We hated the french press, we love the Aero Press. And everywhere a coffee thread comes up theres always Aero Press lovers and never Aero Press complaints.
Makes grsat coffee and minimal clean up is perfect for the boat.
We use the ground coffees found in the grocery from Duncan or New England or 8 oclock or whatever looks good
Reviewed with the admiral, apparently the aero press is on order also. She is so up on things. That's why she's the admiral... along with some other wonderful traits. :D

I use my inverter for powering AC power things of course :)

The most common are:
the Mr. Coffee
the wet/dry vac (use this a lot)
power tools that need more than the battery powered ones
the dinghy air pump (much less trouble to get it out that use the hand pump)
microwave once in a while

I use the inverter part of my unit MUCH more than I use the charger part of it.

Coffee

If I was trying to save power I would just use our propane stove perk
and yes it does smell so good in morning.
My wife loves to take charge in our galley when on the boat even when
I try to make breakfast but making coffee for me in the 110 drip is so easy
and what I do when cruising is at night before going to bed we usually run
the gen while watching some TV and at the same time I make the drip coffee
and we put it in a carafe to keep it warm so most time I get up early I have a nice hot cup of coffee ready for me and if needed I can warm it up in microwave.

There is only ONE thing in life more important than Coffee... but this is a 'G' rated forum so I'll let you fill in the blank... But I will admit that I get less of that than coffee these days, lol! :cussing:

It is increasingly apparent that coffee is more important than inverters.

Misread that. For a moment I thought you were claiming a G-rated forum was more important than Coffee :) LOL

Maybe at "our" age, we need the coffee to keep us awake to...

After 4 or 5 cups of coffee the only thing more important to me is an empty bathroom.

Off Track

I guess we got off track with the coffee but looking on this post
show's how great a inverter can be big or small but be careful when using
a small portable inverter that plug into a cigarette lighter socket because
they can melt and also melt internal wiring also,I made this mistake on one
of my older pickup truck for charging a computer on a road trip.
I have 2500 inverter on my boat but I also have a 1000 inverter that I could use but wire to the battery with heavy wiring so all who have a inverter/charge on your boat know how nice it comes in handy away from shore power.

Man.. I hope I don’t think about this happening any more today.. time to reset my mind..

A little back to inverters.. I used to run old analog TV's from inexpensive inverters at a cabin and I think this clearly shortened the life of the TV.

However, I have also run more modern electronics that all now have "switching power supplies" and no longer seem to have any issue. For example, my cell phone charger uses a little switcher. My laptop also uses a switcher. You can generally tell a switcher is used as they operate over a very large input voltage - like both 110 and 220 just by changing the plug.

Someone designing a power supply could take the output of a cheap inverter in mind and make the switcher easily tolerate the waveform. And its likely that the switcher is inherently more tolerant.. but you can’t be sure so you take a risk using a cheap inverter.
