Inverter Wiring

I bought my '81 33ft hunter some time ago, knowing it had a 1000W inverter. My problem is I haven't used it. I don't even know exactly how it is wired up. Can anyone give me pointers or a diagram of how it should be wired into the yacht and how it is used as I have no instructions on its use.

what brand and model

of inverter is it? Are referring to the 120 volt wiring, or the DC side of the inverter? The type of inverter has alot to do with the installation. ross

Inverter wiring.

Ross is right, we probably need more info. Is it just an inverter? Or maybe an inverter/charger. Can you follow the shorepower wire from the back of the plug? Does it go to the inverter? It should be a heavy and flat wire, looks like household 110V wiring. That same kind of wire should come out of the inverter and go to your electrical panel. Then there should be two heavy round wires, one black and one red. Black goes to ground, maybe shares a negative battery post or goes to the engine block. Red goes to one of the house battery positive terminals. You can easily test it to see if it is wired correctly. Simply plug a 110v appliance into your 110v outlet and see if it works. Make sure the shorepower is unplugged and your outlets are turned on. My H37C has a 110 off/on breaker and then a breaker for the outlets on each side of the boat. If it is also a charger then you also need to know about dip switches that set the battery type and other variables.

trace wires

After my boat was hit with lightning, I got up and personal with the wiring. In the process, I discovered that the inverter power is wired to the port outlet breaker and that breaker is not wired any other way. In port when hooked up to shore power the inverter/charger is on charging batteries and the port outlets are hot when the port outlet breaker is on. When sailing, the DC breaker is off, but the port outlets are hot if the inverter and port breakers are on. If I wish to supply inverter juice to my A/c I would have to re-wire. I don't think using A/C frome the two house batteries is very wise, however.
