I have an inverter on my boat to run 110AC appliances. The problem or question is does this only work when connected to shore power? It works fine on shore power but when I am using the batteries it doesn't seem to work - is this normal. My boat is a 1998 beneteau 352.

Rob..The way our Heart Freedom 25 works is the

inverter is bipassed when we are connected to 110v..There is no need to invert just use the shore power. The inverter kicks in when you disconnect from shore and it inverts 12v to the required 110v. I don't know what set up you have, but on a relatively new 98 model is it an inverter/charger? If it is a combo unit and the batteries are staying charged it sounds like the inverter has failed. If it is a stand alone inverter, have you checked the fuse on the unit. I know on the Heart it is small and easy to miss. Hope this helps Dick McKee S/V ONE9TEEN

Xantrex inverter

Rob, has this problem only just occured or since you owned the boat? Do you have a seperate control panel for the inverter, say in the nav station? The recent Xantrex models have a small control panel which can configure the inverter. The older control panels had dip switches to set and change settings while the newer ones are keypad driven. It may be the invert function has been turned off. Good luck

How its wired

Rob, it depends on how your invertor is wired in your boat. I have a Heart 2000 and it is wired in series with the A/C input. Anytime the 110 volt A/C is disconnected from the input, the invertot kicks in and supplies A/C. This is the easiest way to wire it in. There is a problem with this means of wiring it in. If the air conditioner is running at the dock and A/C power fails, then the invertor tries to run the air unit. Two things are wrong with this, you exceed the amperage of the invertor and air units don't like square waves. Either way, the breaker trips, but not before the compressor makes some strange sounds. I now leave the invertor turned off except when using it at anchorage.
