Inverter noise

I'm curious if it's just me or is anybody else bothered by a very high pitched electronic sound coming from the Xantrex Inverter during charging, float charging or inverting. Hunter has placed these in the settee of the main cabin and to me the sound is so intense that I need to shut it down to be able to occupy the cabin. It's like ringing in your ears to a very high intense level. I have been told that Pure Sine Wave inverters do not act in this manner ( and the stock Xantrex is not a Sine Wave model) and I'm baffled as to why Hunter would install it in the middle of the main cabin.

Never heard that with my Xantrex

Lynn: I am not sure which model charger you have, but we have never heard anything like that with either one of our Xantrex/Statpower chargers. Which model do you have?

Freedom 2500 W

When I switch off the shore power and push the "invert" button on the remote panel, the cabin ambient sound goes from complete quiet to a skull cracking ringing sound. My Hunter dealer had a local technician bench test it and his response was "That's what this model does". "I guess it would not be a problem if it resided in an engine room or locker".

hope you didn't pay this "technician"

You might notice a discernable low humming sound in a properly functioning inverter but nothing more. Common sense should indicate Freedom (Xantrex) inverters don't make equipment which creates the noise you describe and certainly any so-called technician should be able to figure that out. What could cause the problem is pure speculation but I would guess the step-up transformer might be a candidate. Regardless, this isn't normal and a knowledgeable service person should be able to determine if it's fixable.

I have the Freedom 2500 and there is a small buzz if I put my ear next to it when charging and a bit more when in invert mode, but nothing as you describe. Rick D. As an aside, Lynn, an in the interest of full disclosure, I should add that I am old and my wife complains that my hearing is lousy. However, I had it checked and the technician said it was 'normal'. When I told him what my wife said, he replied "that's what all the guys say when they come in for a test. It's just marital deafness". So, maybe, maybe not, but it sounds like something is amiss with your unit. Lots of these are installed in main cabins.

I agree wholeheartedly

and I did not pay for this, My dealer removed it, took it to a local Xantrex authorized service center- West Coast Electric in Marina Del Rey and re-installed it. I think Hunter and Xantrex need to step up to the plate on this one and I think I'll begin my mission tomorrow morning as the boat is still under warranty.

Thanks guys

My dealer, H & S pulled the unit and had West Coast Marine Electric run a complete bench test and declared the unit to be properly functioning. This boat is still under warranty and I think I need to take it to the next level. H & S has always had my back on more than a few issues however this one may have to be between me and Hunter as they've already informed H&S that this is not an issue in their opinion. I think the best thing to do would be sit in one of the in-stock new boats and listen. If there is no noise, I've pretty much got an open and shut case. If there is noise, shame on Hunter, or I'm off to a psychiatrist. Every person I've brought on board hears it loud and clear and if they remain in the cabin for an extended period of time, it becomes nerve-racking to them also.

A low noise hum is acceptable...

anything more than a low hum, the unit is defective even thought it still may bench test correctly. However, noise level is another standard for testing acceptance applicable in electronics.
