I have a 1990 Hunter passage that needs new batteries and an inverter. What is everybody using these days? My house is 2 8D. Thinking about golf cart batteries now as the 8d can only get to 250 amps for that same space. Have a Freedom 1800 now, but hearing bad things about them. Also thinking maybe a larger model.

My inverter/charger is an old Heart Freedom 2000. It was in the boat when I bought her in 1998. Twelve years now and never a problem.

Have five AGMs, four for the house and one 900cca for the starter. Bulletproof, never have to look at anything except the Link 2000 once in awhile. My Gels were eight years old and still good. I expect at least as much life from the AGMs.

I had a heart 2000 in my 41. No problems ever. Just bought a new one for my cruising boat. Wanted the 100 amp charger to minimize running my Honda 2000 generator.

Aways had golf cart batts. Bought them at Walmart, Never had to replace them in the 6 years I owned the 41, or the 4 years I owned the 34. Can't fit them into my 37c, so I have 4 Group 31 lead acid batteries in the bilge sump for 400AH. Not my first choice, but we'll see how it goes this fall when cruising season starts down here near the equator.

I went with the Lifeline AGMs when I switched batteries a year ago (the batteries used by the dealer died during the period of time between the commissioning of the boat and my purchasing it). The Lifeline AGMs came highly recommended from a guy who does a lot of battery maintenance and warranty claims. The caveat is that AGMs have a different charging algorithm than lead-acid batteries, so be aware that your current charger may not support that.

I have that same original inverter in my 1991 Hunter P42, and it still works like a champ. Never a problem. I wouldn't change it out if it's still functioning.

I have three 10-year-old 8D gel batteries that I bought from West Marine and have taken good care of them with the proper charging/discharging regimens. I ran a test on them about a year ago (left them unused for 72 hours without a charge on them and they held their full voltage; also ran them down to dead--10.5V after pulling 200+ amps out of each one of them) and they were still working fine. I'll take off cruising next year w/o changing them out. I have the third one located under the aft bunk, just forward of the quadrant, held in place with bolted-down 2X4's and tie-downs. I would say that either gel or AGM would do you fine.

I use 4 Trojan T-104 golf cart batteries. I have had really good luck with them. I have a Heart 3000 inverter with the link 2000 monitor. Couldn't live without the link monitor!
