I sometimes wonder about my instincts, like the time I suddenly decided not to fly a plane on a perfect day when the preflight was all completed and all I had to do was buckle up and turn the key. The next pilot to fly it had the engine break a rocker arm and just managed to glide back to the airport.
Intuition has served me well in my career. I never had any formal training in boat design but everything I did just seemed to work and work well. Cruising, I often get to port just as the fog closes in or the wind suddenly starts to blow too strong. Sometimes I get caught but it seems to work out for me more often than it seems the law of averages should dictate.
I’ve been sitting here all afternoon wondering why, after a good night’s sleep, a nap, and a big cup of coffee; I feel so lazy and disinclined to do anything on a very beautiful sailing day. I just went up to watch the sun slip over the yardarm and noticed fire trucks and ambulances on the opposite point of the harbor. The TowboatUS RIB that had been hanging out on a nearby mooring took off across the harbor mouth.
I turned on the radio and heard that an overturned boat had been spotted and they were looking for a missing person in the water. I then looked over at the end of the breakwater on my side of the harbor and saw someone waving from the rocks. I called up the fire department on 16, TowboatUS came back, picked him up, and took him to meet the ambulance to be checked out.
I think I probably sat here all afternoon just to be in the right place at the right time. Let’s hope my intuition continues to serve me so well on this adventure.
