Hi Antonio,

When I was looking to buy a boat, I stumbled across the Vega purely by
accident. I didn't know much about it, except that i had a full keel, low
freeboard, and narrow beam. I fit my criteria for ownnig a boat that would
go anywhere if ever I wanted to go on a cruise outside the Golden Gate. I'm
glad I bought her. She's easy to handle, singlehands well, and isn't
heavy-handed on the pocket book. But be prepared to deal with the combi
drive/feathering prop. There aren't many mechanics that know how or are
willing to work on this drive. I ended up repowering the original Volvo
MD-6B engine/combi drive with a Yanmar 2GM20 diesel, standard transmission,
and a standard stuffing box. And I'm glad I did. It's worth the money.

The Vega is very sturdy, I'm always hearing about how the "little" Vega out
performs the big boys when the sea state gets rough.

You might try and find John Neal's (Mahina Expeditions conducts sailing and navigation training and expeditions in the South Pacific and offers offshore sailing seminars) "The
Log of the Mahina," and read it. It'll give you some insights, and it's a
good read. You might want to visit his web site.

Richard Henderon recommended the Vega as one of the top 10 boats for
singlehanding in his book "Singlehanded Sailing," and is in good company
with the Valiant 40 and Contessa 32.

You're on the right track. I've had my Vega going on four years now, and am
totally happy with it.

Hello members of the albin vega group.

My name is Antonio Virgini. I have recently joined this group as i
have an interest in this particular boat. Let me give you some
background and explain how I became interested in this boat. I
am presently not an owner of an abin vega. I sail an O'day 22 on
Lake Champlain. (i live in Montreal)
I was introduced to the boat the roug John Vigor's book " 20
small sailboats to take you anywhere" and I must confess that
that the vega at first glance was not my preferred boat. I was not
impressed by the illustration/drawing of the boat. Somewhere I
found a photo of the boat and revised my opinion. Since this
change of heart I have found more and more things about this
boat that have put it at the head of the list of boats that i would
consider.
Let me share these considerations with you. Following are the
things I like about the Albin Vega. ( This list may be incomplete
as I continue to refine my "requirements and plans".
a. It's reputation as a solid and capable boat.
b. The possibility of trailering. (with difficulty?)
c. Costs related to size. ( a smaller boat would cost less,
mooring etc,)
d. Accomodations are sufficient for a small crew (eg. 1 to 3
persons)
e. I think that this is a lot of boat for its size and cost.
f. I hope to purchase a Vega in the future either as a project boat
or to wait till I can find one within my budget. (presently very low)

I hope to follow this group and gain some insight into the vega
and the people who sail the etc.

By the way, i am getting on to 50 and hope to trailer and cruise in
the carribean within the next few years, I am a freelance worker
in the media and have grown to dislike our winters here with a
passion. So I see the possibility of taking some time off in the
winter renting a large truck, trailering to Florida and cruising
while the cold wind blows above the 45th.

I look forward to following this group and to the possibility of
announcing in the future my home port as an Albin Vega owner.

Best regards
ASV

Hello Antonio,

The first Vega I ever saw was at the Pointe Claire Yacht Club in
Montreal during the early 1970s. I was impressed. Many years later I
purchased a Vega, my first keel boat. I have never regretted the
decision. There are still some Vegas in the Montreal area, should you
wish to see one in the flesh (fiberglass). John Deakin of Pointe
Claire owns (or owned - its been some years since I was in
Montreal...)a Vega that was moored in Lac St. Louis. Also, there was
at least one Vega at Club Nautique des Deux Montaignes. Good luck!

Ciao Antonio: I know of one Vega on Lake Champlain in Charlotte owned for many years by a gentleman whose last name, I believe, is Quackenbush. I do not know if this Vega is for sale, however. I have a Vega and love it. Another boat I considered was the Mirage 27 built in Canada to specifications by an acclaimed designer. There used to a few of these on Lake Champlain when I sailed there years ago.

oh... and as far as the feathering combi prop is concerned... i loved the
thing.... had great control of the speed over water.... and had very very
few problems.... actually the only problem i had was a previous owner had
glassed in the cutlass.. which was slighly out of alignment with the engine
proper... so caused a little to much water to go through the stuffing box...
just needed grease each time it was used...

good luck

The combi is a fine piece of metal and inexpensive to
rebuild. I worry about shorepower and electrolsis
however it made it this far! Throw a zinc grouper
over the side and connect it to the shaft while at the
marina.

Volvo engine runs well also.
