Howdy everyone -

I've just made a deal today on a 1968 Pearson Wanderer 30 and can't wait to get sailing on her.

I found the boat a couple weeks ago and had her surveyed just last week. Got the surveyor's report today via e-mail, contacted the seller, made an offer and he accepted. So within about a week, I should have title in hand.

So I'm checking out the relevant forums, signing up and making my presence known.

I live in Richmond, VA and will be docking the boat in Queen's Creek, just south of the Piankatank River, next to Gwynn Island.

Bill,

Welcome to the Pearson forum. In addition to this forum, you may find the Pearson Info sit helpfull. It is:

http://www.pearsoninfo.net/

We also sail the Chesapeake and frequently sail to a friends house on Wilton Creek, off the Piankatank. Next time we are in the area maybe we will connect.

Hope you enjoy your Wanderer as much as we enjoy our Pearson. If you have any questions about Pearsons we will be happy to help with answers, right or wrong.

Welcome

Yes, welcome! I sail a 1971 Pearson 33 out of Charleston, SC. Had the boat for a year, and have discovered all kinds of things about the breed. Attached is the measurment sheet for all Pearsons. May help as you begin tweeking the boat.

Well I received the title on Monday, so she's now officially "mine." I will be meeting the seller at the boat this Saturday so he can take all of his stuff off and we will go for a sail for him familiarize me with everything.

A buddy of mine who is a very experienced sailor will help me sail her down to the new marina in a week or two. That should be a fun trip - two easy days of cruising.

Bill, Congratulations. I, too, am in love with a Pearson Wanderer 30. She is a 1970 and in what seems to be wonderful condition. Would it be too rude to ask what you paid? We are headed to the bank tomorrow and keeping fingers crossed for a good survey.

Well I have to say that I don't think mine will necessarily be a good sample to be representative of the fair market value of a Pearson Wanderer. Her condition is not as good as a few others I saw online. I found three others for sale or recently sold online that looked like the price was somewhere between $12,000 to $15,000. They were in very nice condition.

I paid substantially less than that. Mine is in good condition overall, but she still needs some "deferred maintenance" and aesthetic projects attended to. The previous owner did a lot of work on her during the eight years he owned her to rectify the neglect allowed by the guy he bought her from, but there is still more to be done.

Even with the leaks in the cabin roof (pretty easily fixable, actually) and the various bits and pieces needing paint and in some cases, replacement, I feel I got a decent deal. The hull is very sound and solid. It is a very well-built boat and she sails great.

I know I'll be putting some money into her (I already have done a little bit - new batter), but I'll be doing as much as possible myself.

Hello Gentlemen,
I purchased my 1969 Wanderer this past July and she has been a pleasure to own. I am definitely interested in speaking with other Wanderer / Pearson owners and will be putting up a Wanderer site over the winter to document info on the model and share info with others.
She is built like a tank but will surprise you with how nimble she is.
Please keep in touch and I will be announcing the Wanderer site asap.

Best Regards,
Viking

Hello all:

Three weeks ago I bought Wanderer No. 138, after ten years in a wing-keel Hunter 23. Like all good old boats, she needs work. She threw a prop blade halfway through the 50-mile trip to the haul out for prop shaft and cutless bearing replacement. At the yard, I think I got PB Blaster overspray on the transmission rear seal while trying to unbolt the prop shaft coupler. Apparently that's not good, so... the transmission rear seal needs to be replaced to be on the safe side. The gas tank has to come out because it blocks access to the rear of the engine. The fiberglass-tube cockpit drain through-hulls look like they'd break if I lean on them too hard. The wooden rudder dried out and split so I'm doing epoxy and fiberglass repairs and I was advised to replace the wire centerboard pendant while the boat is out.

Is it worth it? This is a fast, stable, attractive, easy to singlehand, shoal-draft 30-ft cruiser with standing headroom and a strong FWC Atomic 4 (love the sound!). Of course!

Peter
