Well I've done it! I've cured that infernal clanging that bugged us in the middle of the night even in the quietest of anchorages. While running a new VHF cable up the mast, I added a wire tie at 3 foot intervals (with little hope other than the hope that it wouldn't screw things up.) Well the halyards are operating smoothly and the noise is gone. At long last the noise is gone. I slept like the dead in the slip this weekend. Doesn't it figure I didn't solve this until after I listed the boat for sale. 8 years of dinging nights. Well it hasn't sold yet and I'm still sleeping on her! I think I'll update my add... Mast noise suppression system....
