I have the mast down (on saw horses on top o' the boat); I plan to change the halyards and also the standing rigging. . . question : I've already taken the old rigging off, including the thru-bolt that holds the tangs - is this going to mess up the "free run" of the halyards inside the mast? is there something I should do before pulling new halyards thru?

Yes and no. The halyards could end up on the "wrong" side of the thru-bolts. But I am not sure it would make a lot of difference. You would want the front two halyards to go down the mast in front of the bolts and the aft two halyards behind the bolts. If they went on the other side there might be some additional friction but probably not serious, maybe not even noticeable.

You could ensure they went on the right side by facing the mast front downward while installing the forward halyards. Then install the bolts and turn the mast over with the back facing down. Now install the aft most halyards. I assume your Kenyon mast has four like mine, two in front for jib and spinnaker and two aft for main and spare. I use the spare to control my topping lift.

Ed is correct but I have a few additions. There should be a spacer tube that runs across that the bolt feeds through. Has to be there. It probably stayed but check it. If it'is there it will be holding the halyards in place where they should be. When I have to reeve halyards through with the mast down I use 1/2" pvc pipe. I set in a bend at the top to allow me to go over the blots/spacer tubes.

Sheaves. The Kenyon sheaves are aluminum castings with a phenolic bushing pressed in. Not inherently bad, but over the years the aluminum corrodes where it meets the plastic. This squeezes the bushing causing it to grab onto the "axle" shaft. I have one halyard that is almost immovable sue to this. There is a company that advertises in tha back of Good Old Boat that will make up custom delrin sheaves but it's real costly. I will probably just ream out the bushing and call it done unless someone has a better idea or source..
