I have a 1985 Beneteau Idylle 13.5, That has some fresh water damage inside. Some of my teak faced ply panels are rotten at the very bottom, or have rotten spots. I would like to cut these out, and splice in new pieces, and then skin it. My question is what is the best way of cutting these sections out and cleaning up the area, if I have formica on the other side, that I am trying to preserve?

... or if the damage is only at the very, very bottom for which you only need to clean away say less than a couple of inches, there is an attachment for Dremel tools that turn it into a very effective "mini" router.

I burned up three Dremel tools asking for more than they could offer. Then I bought a Dewalt rotary tool. They come with 1/8 and 1/4 inch collets and are not hobby tools. You simply can't over load one.

Using a router you may have trouble getting to the very edge of the panel. Route out enough above the rotten area to allow for a Fein multimaster wood cutting blade running it down behind the rotten wood parallel to the back side of the formica.. I agree with Tim R the Multimaster works best. Once you use it you'll use it for everything. Heck I got rid of my chain saw. Can't beat it for precision work.
Cheapo me bought the Dremel Multimax. Harbor Frieght has some nice knock off in the 30 range.

A router will work however you can’t get into a corner. My choice over a rotary tool would be a Fein MultiMaster this tool is the answer to so many problems I don’t even no where to start. I have been using mine for a lot of things where I couldn’t get in with any other tool today I had to remove a section of tongue and groove to pull some wire I cut the tongue side of a board using the groove as a guide and a straight edge to rest the cutter against to cross cut when the wire was in I put it back together and it looked seamless. The cost of this tool is substantial but it is worth every penny. Mine is almost 10 years old and still going strong.
