Interior Wood Touch Up Suggestions

After a season of racing the inside of our boat has its fair share of interior wood dings.
The marks are pretty minor (compressions) however was wondering how I go about retouching them. I know that the quick method is to use one of those filler wax pencils however was thinking of applying a clear varnish touch up to build up the dent using fine art brush followed by a wet sand with 1500 grit.

Any suggestions?

Arghhhhh! Harnesses and tethers seem to be the biggest culprits! People just have to toss them down. I now cover all the tables with thick non-skid cut to fit. Saves a lot of damage.

Before anything else, try some boiling water on a cloth edge repeatedly to see if you can lift the depression all or part way. I have had it work with some and not on others. If not, I'd try spotting with varnish as you suggested and the last thing would be the pencil. I think you'd regret that when it came time for a full refinish IMHO. I think Ross probably has better insight. Good luck!

Will Boiled Water On a Cloth Leave A White Mark?

Years ago I caused the varnished floor of our cabin sole to go white because I left a bucked sitting there for 15 minutes. The water from the bucked caused a white ring which I had to hide with some diluted stain. I am suspect of using any water on wood. Maybe Ross will have some suggestions.

try useing a steam iron ....put a towel on the wood and then iron it using the steam button it may pull the dings back out,,i know it works well on bass wood but havent tryed it on teak yet.....notice i said yet.....

You are correct; it is a risk. I did not have it happen (permanently) by limiting the size of the contact and the duration of it. However, your results may vary...

I know this is an old thread so apologies for reviving it but what do you use to clean the interior wood / veneer?

Its been recommended to me to use murphys soap - have ordered some and plan to try it when I get back

Nicks, scrapes, small gouges, and even small screw holes can be filled with lacquer furniture sticks. You need a special iron to do it right, but you can get away with a soldering gun if you don't let it get too hot. . .you want it to melt, not burn. Properly color matched and faired in and these kinds of repairs are nearly invisible

My issue is more salt water marks, dirt etc

Especially the back wall when you walk down the steps in to the cabin

My teak is all faded as well on my cabinets etc

If it's teak veneered plywood and trims it probably will respond to an oil application. I would clean it with plain old mineral spirits and apply several coats of a teak oil. One coat will look good while it's wet, but you'll need two or three to get an even penetration. Ventilate your space while working. Even an oil finish will fume up a cabin enough to be detrimental to our (remaining) brain cells.

I've got the murphys (I've also got some Mineral spirits I will test on a piece) which I will use to clean and then I see that mainesail has recommended

Old English Dark polish is great for covering and hiding small scratches and dings, we use it a lot in our boat, and the color blends well with dark teak.
