Hi there. I have a 1997 Catalina Mark II and it is time to spruce up the interior. The teak has wetahered quite a bit, especially around the companionway and the head. What products should I use to refinish the teak and what methodolgy is best for doing this?

I have had really good results with Cetol.... I'ts expensive, but I find it works beautifully and lasts. Good Luck.

For interior wood I use lemon oil once a month. It does not darken like teak oil, it smells great, and it is a natural mold fighter. Because it is interior you don't need the UV protection additives.

This is a "what do you like" question. Choices are keeping it "natural" as it is, or coating it with cetol or varnish.

Some folks think varnish/coating is great and "nautical." I personally don't. I don't like the reflections down below off shiny varnish (I used to think it was nautical, but changed my mind :)), and I use cetol only abovedecks.

We just use teak oil. I like the soft, un-shiny factory finish. Our companionway gets the most re-oiling, 'cuz as you've noted it gets the most sun. Others use lemon oil. I put the oil on with a wide foam brush and rub it in with a rag. Simple.

Your boat, your choice.

I use murphies oil soap does not darken the teak just helps clean the dirt out of the wood grain it does not hurt any existing varnished finishes. I use it around the main companion way and for cleaning and freshening up all the wood surfaces below.

Cetal is a bit of an over kill, it's designed for exterior wood. For interior wood, any of the above will work, I use teak oil.

These are replies where pictures with replies would be priceless. Just my opinion...

Sometimes pictures of down below can't tell the "whole picture." Over the years I've taken lots down below, and daylight, light coming in the portlights and flash pictures make such a tremendous difference that it's hard to tell.

It's simply the finish one prefers, although I wholeheartedly agree that cetol down below just wouldn't work. For me, at least.

Before you go whole hog on anything, try a little bit, in an inconspicuous place, pretty much what they tell you on the side of any paint can! :):):)

Good luck.
